To add: Mastodon's chronological timeline also does actually make specific curation choices, and it does not actually show you all posts from an account you follow. Suppose you follow Alice. You only see replies Alice makes if you also follow the account she replies to, replies by Alice to […]

The Fair Tech Summit is coming to an end. Shortly before closing, I gave a quick, two-minute lightning talk on Conversations. #FairTech #Conversations_im #XMPP #Jabber

We've just finished setting up our XMPP stand at LinuxDays (@linuxdays) in Prague. If you are in the area make sure to visit us. We are here all day today and tomorrow (Sunday). We have stickers and buttons! #XMPP #Jabber #LinuxDays #LinuxDaysCZ

Google is raising the minimum SDK version for several core AndroidX libraries to 24 (Android 7). This means that even well-intentioned app developers will have a much harder time supporting Android 6. #Android #OpenSource #Fdroid #Google

RE: https://gultsch.social/@daniel/117280438824908947 Google finally managed to publish Conversations 2.20.2 last night, after apparently very thoroughly reviewing it for 16 days. The current version, which has been available on F-Droid for multiple days, is 2.20.3 😂 #FDroid #Conversations_im […]

This is unacceptable. The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week. I understand that the pipeline is clogged with AI slop, but #Google needs to prioritize #Android apps that have been around for 12+ years and push updates only once a month.

Conversations 2.21.0 (releasing around Oct 20, 2026) will enable “Require channel binding” by default for new installs. If you run a public #XMPP server, please ensure it supports SCRAM-*-PLUS channel binding so new users can connect.

You know how it’s become impossible to buy anything on Amazon because you’re given the illusion of choice, but everything is just drop-shipped junk from China? I'm starting to have a similar feeling toward new open-source projects post-LLMs.

I promised an English version of my „Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence“ talk, and it looks like I’m going to Prague for LinuxDays 2026 in October! https://pretalx.linuxdays.cz/linuxdays-2026/talk/H7ANQQ/ #XMPP #Jabber #DigitalSovereignty

pretalx.linuxdays.czJabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence LinuxDays 2026When it comes to digital independence, various solutions are being discussed in the field of communication and instant messaging. On the one hand, there is the centralized service of a US non-profit organization. On the other hand, there is the publicly documented API of a company that was largely built with venture capital. However, it might be worth taking a look at long-standing solutions that follow an actual internet standard and stand out due to numerous independent implementations. Jabber/XMPP is one such internet standard and is "ready for prime time". In over 25 years, the XMPP instant messaging protocol has seen its fair share of ups and downs. This talk highlights the recent history of the protocol and explains why open source alone, without federation and vendor-independent standards, is not enough for true digital sovereignty. The current status quo of XMPP is showcased through modern features like emoji reactions, moderation, read state synchronization across multiple devices, and time zone indicators for contacts. Additionally, the presentation offers a look ahead at upcoming protocol extensions and the initiative to return to the IETF with "XMPP 2.0" to update the existing RFC standards. Finally, attendees will learn how to easily and smoothly get started in the XMPP ecosystem today.

RE: https://gultsch.social/@daniel/117195237916916162 If you are excited about my upcoming talk on #XMPP, I encourage you to read my essay, “Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence” (if you haven’t already). The talk will be more technical in nature, but the essay hits on similar topics […]

I have been invited to the “Datenspuren” conference in Dresden to speak about Jabber/XMPP and 25 years of digital independence. The talk is going to be in German, but I've submitted an English version to other conferences. https://talks.datenspuren.de/ds26/talk/GF8KMU/

RE: https://gultsch.social/@daniel/117151276111833796 Something that bothers me about the push for digital sovereignty is that a lot of it seems to be motivated by nationalism and anti-American sentiment. That's why we need standards and federation, so instead of just switching to an instant […]

I wrote a blog post on Jabber/XMPP and 25 years of digital independence. https://gultsch.de/posts/25-years-of-digital-independence/ It shares a title with my upcoming talk and touches on similar themes around open standards, collective ownership, and avoiding vendor lock-in. However, it is an […]

After a full conference season of talking about #UnifiedPush, I’m now preparing a talk on XMPP again. I haven’t presented on XMPP in a while because I didn’t feel like a lot was happening. That’s changing now. #Jabber #XMPP

With Google closing down the #Android ecosystem more and more, I think there is a lesson to be learned about relying on something that is technically open source but largely controlled by a single company. That’s why I would be very careful building something on top of #Matrix.
