Daniel Hinds

It is publication day for my debut poetry collection New Famous Phrases! I've been able to say I'm a poet for a few years now, but today is the 1st day I feel like An Author. Thanks to my publisher @brokensleepbooks.bsky.social & editor @godzillakent.bsky.social for making this dream a reality.

Looks like a great @brokensleepbooks.bsky.social lineup for next year, I'll definitely be getting the new books from Sean O'Brien and Penelope Shuttle. You can support Broken Sleep by the Crowdfunder in the thread, or by ordering some books.

Books I’ve bought recently from @brokensleepbooks.bsky.social include work by @leiabutler.bsky.social @danielghinds.bsky.social @fiddes.bsky.social @tomsnarsky.bsky.social & Mirko Boncaldo, poetry of excellence & importance. If you can donate (see thread👆) to support this great publisher, please do🙏

We've launched a crowdfunder to help us publish next year's books, and we'd love your support. There's a reward at every level, from backlist lucky dips and slightly battered misprints to new books, a whole year of books, and one-to-one feedback on your poems www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/help-broke...

Thanks very much to everyone who came along to listen to @corinnaboard.bsky.social and I read our poems last night, and to @cheltpoetfest.bsky.social, Anna Saunders and Zoe Brooks for hosting us, I really enjoyed it. I loved hearing all the open mic poets read too!

A lovely evening listening to @corinnaboard.bsky.social and @danielghinds.bsky.social It's great to follow Corinna's journey- such heartbreaking pieces- and to be introduced to Daniel's strong work, especially The Magi's Camel! Here are some trees for you and your mum, Corinna. x

Happening tonight, if anyone else would like to listen to Corinna and I read, along with the open mic poets.

I received Simon Armitage's new translation of Gilgamesh this week as a birthday present. Oddly, I've read more of his translations and adaptations, such as The Death of King Arthur and The Odyssey, than his poetry collections. I always find his translations compelling.

Back from the Durham Book Festival with lots of signed books from Susanna Clarke, including her new publication The Bishop of Durham Attempts to Surrender the City. Great to hear her talk about the genesis of Strange & Norrell, the north, and her creative process.

Heading to the Durham Book Festival today to hear Susanna Clarke talk about her new book The Bishop of Durham Attempts to Surrender the City. Piranesi was one of my favourite novels of recent years and I loved Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

Happy National Poetry Day! This year's @poetrydayuk.bsky.social theme is "Wonder" so if anyone is "wondering" what to read next they could give my UNESCO Bridges of Struga Award winning collection New Famous Phrases a go. Message me if you would like a signed copy. #NationalPoetryDay

I have a soft spot for A Modest Proposal which was one of my undergrad dissertation poems. Wind is well realised and deservedly routinely anthologised. October Dawn has a lovely snappy last line and the sudden prehistoric creatures are a delight.

I reread Ted Hughes's debut The Hawk in the Rain recently. It is frontloaded with startling classics, the title poem, The Jaguar, The Thought-Fox, & The Horses that announced the arrival of a major new poet. The collection dips a bit in the middle & ends with emotive war poems.

How could you not? I spent several weeks with dear @corinnaboard.bsky.social , and others, workshopping The Process of Poetry and have followed her amazing progress ever since 💜 Can't wait to hear @danielghinds.bsky.social too. See you there!

It is now a month away until my upcoming poetry reading with the wonderful @corinnaboard.bsky.social for @cheltpoetfest.bsky.social. The event will be on the 19th October, 7pm UK time, online. Audience tickets & open mic tickets available if you would like to read a poem too. Link to register below.
