📣 New BBS preprint out now! 📣 "Models casting egalitarian societies as crucibles of equality perpetuate the factually uninformed notion that foragers are somehow more noble. Critiques portray egalitarianism as romantic fantasy. Neither characterization is wholly justified." doi.org/10.1017/S014...

Happy to share our new paper in @royalsociety.org with Arleyns, Danier HM & Cody Ross! Combining network data with beh. economic games in four rural villages in Colombia, we assessed how prestige and dominance were associated with cooperation—focussing on whether dominance levelling would occur.

royalsocietypublishing.orgSocial and economic consequences of prestige and dominance in rural Colombian social networksAbstract. Social status regulates influence and well-being in most social animals. In humans, social status can be attained via distinct routes: prestige (

Prestige was associated with positive social and economic outcomes, but results related to dominance were complicated! Dominant individuals received some smaller social and economic benefits. At the same time, they were more feared and distrusted, and more likely to be exploited and punished.

Overall, dominance is a precarious strategy that's dependent on social context: it can lead to ostracism and levelling behaviours by a many community members, but such costs may be offset if dominant individuals use selective cooperation to maintain good standing among a sub-group of the community.

I have just accepted my dream position: I am officially a CNRS researcher at the University of Rennes, in France, where I’ll be joining the @ceec-research.bsky.social lab. There, I'll be working on my favourite topic of all time: the semantic capacities of nonhuman primates

Also worth noting how many of the signatories of the letter defending Cofnas call themselves evolutionary psychologists, including those with gatekeeping roles or large public platforms. Concerning to have the discipline represented by those who, at very best, misunderstand academic freedom
