How do politicians argue about science? 🏛️🔬 Daniel Wiesner, Jakob-Moritz Eberl & Sophie Lecheler analysed 104,000+ Austrian parliamentary speeches (1996–2022) and found that party ideology shapes how science gets invoked. #SciComm #SciencePolicy - jcom.sissa.it/article/pubi...
Ever wondered whether politicians rely more on scientific evidence in their communication over time? We looked at almost 30 years of Austrian parliamentary debates, and the answer is: No. 🔗 Read the full paper here: doi.org/10.22323/385...
Instead, the more striking differences are between political parties rather than over time. This concerns not only the overall salience of science, but also how parties talk about science, with parties bringing their own partisan terminology into science-related debates.
Our new paper with @jamoeberl.bsky.social and @solecheler.bsky.social is now out in the @jscicom.bsky.social #ScienceCommunication #PoliticalCommunication #ScienceAndPolicyMaking

The salience of scientific evidence in parliamentary speeches remains remarkably stable over time. While we do see changes for specific topics at specific points in time, there is no overall trend toward more or less references to scientific evidence or scientific actors.
Had a very nice and productive week in beautiful Kraków at the ECPR General Conference @ecpr.bsky.social! Lots of inspiring exchanges, interesting discussions, and valuable feedback from brilliant colleagues.

It was great to attend the Day of Parliamentary Research at the 🇦🇹 Parliament and share ongoing work on science and expertise in parliamentary debate: 1. Who refers to science, when, and in what contexts? 2. How do politicians draw on expertise, evidence, and knowledge in debate? @parlament.gv.at

Misinformation research has a causality problem: lab experiments are limited; observational studies confounded. We used causal inference on 9.9M tweets, quantifying effects in the wild while blocking backdoor paths. Does misinfo get higher engagement? Are following discussions more emotional? 🧵
