You can put aside socialist-leftist prescriptions about how dangerous that alliance is, if you would like. But everything I read, across the political spectrum, agrees that these countries are connected. It is just civic maturity to pay attention to Brazil's election.

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

Gender, domesticity, heterosexuality clearly driving forces in Holmes performance Nathan falls for on camera. I get the critiques that it sorta glosses over the depth of the actual things Holmes did. Performance of all sorts of masculinities in this movie. Heterosexual nonsense. Great movie

Just got out of You Can See Everything. Worth the hype. Everyone in this movie is just manipulating each other

Nathan Fielder: so when you said you CAN dress the chicken, you meant put it in a new outfit Amelia Bedelia: exactly. I don't understand the big deal Her insane BF: babe, your mind is just on another frequency

That’s why I connect an Apple TV and turn off the internet on the smart TV. Apple is at least more forward about security and privacy

More importantly, this might explain why these TVs are so slow despite the simplicity of the firmware!!

tbh I think it’s just film economics (it’s also still in like 50 or so theaters) bsky.app/profile/labu...

There's apparently a conspiracy theory that the Musk doc is being buried by its new owner (a guy who has done anti-Musk work & financially backs ProPublica) since it got removed from a bunch of theaters but I think the more obvious answer is that it expanded too much and no one went.

Listening to Amanda Seyfried argue with Billy about Charlie Kirk, politics was electric. i love her

Thinking more about the movie - how much of the ambiguity is based in this deliberate Silicon Valley corporate speak

1 of my students called this the original Challengers and I can’t stop thinking about it

This week we're doing the Hollywood Production Code in media history. Had to switch up my screening - we're gonna watch Ernst Lubitsch's Design for Living (1933)

Most noticed that the ad was aimed at young people new to relationships. Some understood that AI was replaced a friend you’d ask for advice. A few astute students also noticed how it replaced recipe blogs! One noticed that dish could mean chat, gossip as a way of confiding

I think Andrew Dewaard’s argument in Derivative Media is so useful here - reboots, references, remakes are finance capital’s way of exerting control over the unpredictability of media reception. Intertextuality as business strategy in financialized entertainment industry

The problem for cybersecurity enjoyers is that there hasn’t been enough incidents to achieve the regularity and excitement of say, watching sports. Finally, with AI we have solved this

It’s the extension of Big Data logic - that b/c you consented to give data in one aspect at one point in time (social media) means you consented to all future sales, connections, applications of that data (algorithms)

Its pretty clear to me that participation in contemporary public life hinges upon your making available *other people’s* data bsky.app/profile/danr...

So many people giving read/write access to more accounts, more parts of their computer make privacy, consent more difficult. So many 2nd, 3rd, 4th level externalities and possible consequences. Stochastic hacking?

Agreed. Everyone is forgetting that AoIR is a dues paying organization and that we get to decide how we act

In this vein I find it helpful to remember Elizabeth Anderson's argument that the point of education is not to reward merit, but to create it.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

Selling this to the class by telling them it’s about a messy polycule

tbh, I’m not sure AOIR can completely stop this happening on a listserv, only increase the friction to reduce the overall number. But still important to have the policy and follow through on it

No way, AoIR. It would be great if whoever wants to take charge of this bot would claim responsibility
