[texas democratic party waiting room] clayton tucker: [chanting] sid, sid- other candidates: sid, SID james talarico: [pounding his clipboard] SID, SID, SID!

This is legit wild. One of the Trumpiest GOP kooks we’ve had holding high office here in Texas makes an absolute spot-on, beautiful, non-partisan call for government transparency against the governor’s attempt to hide his emails with Elon Musk.

he also once posted a meme saying that “the muslim world” should be nuked, threatened to slap none who wished him “happy holidays” instead of “merry christmas,” held a press conference with a cupcake as a dig at michelle obama, and looks exactly like rich texan from the simpsons

anyway if you are seeing texans on your feed who are like “wait SID MILLER is running around with democrats and condemning republicans????” that’s why they’re so baffled

sid miller went to my favorite coffee shop in south austin with the democrat running to succeed him to tape an msnow spot last week and i hope he comes back for poetry night

fun sid miller facts: 1- ted nugent was his campaign treasurer in his first race for texas ag commissioner 2- he used taxpayer dollars to get a “jesus shot” that he believed would immunize him from all pain forever 3- he traveled to mississippi on campaign funds to compete in a rodeo (and won $880!)

actual question: if the alaska senate race lawsuit is around the idea that voters accidentally cast their ballots for the wrong dan sullivan, and not that he is somehow barred from running, then what would prevent every candidate from getting someone with the same name to run in case they lose?

you’ll never believe this but there was a time when “you’re paying more at the pump while oil companies are making record profits” was a line people would boo at instead of cheer

FactPost@factpostnews.bsky.social

Trump: While oil prices are temporarily high, our oil and gas industry is making hundreds of billions of dollars. My people said, "please don't mention that, sir."

the new ad where the tarrant county sheriff warns that if talarico is elected, he’s going to close the “juvenile prisons” is fascinating to me, because it suggests there are enough swing voters with an emotional attachment to the concept of juvenile prisons that they must be advertised to

there’s another one warning that he wants to cap greenhouse gases. the median texas voter probably does know at least one or two people who work in oil & gas, but i’m just not sure that the words “greenhouse gases” have such positive connotations that people think they must be protected at all costs

we will see in a few days, and maybe i’m wrong and the pro-juvenile prison/pro-greenhouse gases constituency is mighty here, but it sure seems to me like a party that only talks to their most invested base voters and doesn’t know how to message to normal people anymore

the thing nobody tells you about becoming a full-sized candy bar house at halloween is that once you start, you're locked into it until you move unless you're okay seeing disappointed children at your door once a year

i do think “tavern style” as a name is a relatively recent marketing term for what we always just called “thin crust” at chicago pizza places i worked at growing up BUT it’s good to have a name for it, otherwise people think it’s the same as other thin crust pizzas and it is not

Noahconstrictor@noahconstrictor.bsky.social

For all the talk about deep-dish, Chicago actually loves their tavern style, and it's usually the choice for most people in the area when they get their pizza. The deep-dish is a treat, something to do every once in a while.

after i moved to texas, it took me a very very long time to accept that ordering thin crust pizza here would not get me the kind of pizza i actually wanted, but now if a place says they do tavern style, it’ll be a lot closer

i don’t know of anywhere in austin that does it exactly the way i want but at least there are options now! (rosati’s in cedar park is very very close but also i would never eat at rosati’s in chicago)

still thinking about the time i got a credit card with the security code 069 and then like two weeks later the account got compromised and i had to replace it

there are lots of explanations for this that don’t necessarily add up to what everyone on this site wants it to add up to BUT if you weren’t seeing these kinds of numbers it’d be a bad sign

given how many more dem primary voters there were in march, if the numbers right now were the same as in 2022, you’d be asking what happened to all that enthusiasm. that’s not a question anyone needs to ask but trying to read more than that into this is not going to get you anywhere

if you do want something to read into, this is the crowd for the talarico rally in tyler that is about to start in a few minutes

a lot more people voted in the democratic primary in march than usual (which could mean the thing you want it to mean, but that’s not new news), so it follows that the number of voters with prior democratic history casting early ballots would also be up

highly enthusiastic voters are more likely than others to show up on day one because they’re so fuckin psyched, but their votes still only count one time. if the numbers are still this high a week from now then it is more indicative of the thing you want to happen. it’s just too small a data set rn

i think you can see everything is about elizabeth holmes in the same way the lord of the rings is about rings

hearing someone who is potentially going to be in the united states senate in a few months say the words “we are so proud that the chicks are from texas” on stage must be a very strange and validating thing for natalie maines

this is just to say i have eaten the silica packets that were in the box and which you were probably actually i have no idea why are there silica packets in anything so sweet and so cold

i think ‘you can see everything’ is the best thing i’ve seen/read/heard on the complicated subject of telling stories about real people, which i think about every day cuz that’s my job. hard to explain without spoiling anything but it’s almost not even about elizabeth holmes

fun fact, if you try to go to one of the greg abbott campaign events listed on his website, you will need a time machine, as the last time these days/dates matched up was in 2018

also this is an equally strong argument to trump supporters for electing democrats, or for not voting at all

this has to be the absolute wildest closing message i’ve ever seen from a political campaign

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

there is a little boy in this airport terminal having a full-on screaming, crying meltdown and his mom is very sweetly and patiently saying to him, “i know, baby, but it’s for dogs” and i don’t wish for any additional context

the weird thing about paxton is that for years, he genuinely has had the enthusiastic support of the small handful of texas republican primary voters who determine who runs the state. the rest of the party has decided that’s good enough, and it will be, right up until it isn’t

louie fucking gohmert couldn’t take any more of the guy and decided to give his voters an equally wild maga diehard option and they said nah, they’re kpax ride or die. trump didn’t endorse paxton over cornyn to push texas gop voters to his guy, he endorsed to tell those voters that he was with them

texas gop electeds hate him and somebody in his inner circle is clearly relishing meting this stuff out to reporters in drips over the month of october (and if that person is somehow reading this… hey), but until he decided he wanted to be a senator, none of that mattered

genuinely would like to know what his specific questions are and what information he needs to consider them answered

my ai hot take is that it is good if people who want to type slurs at claude get told that it’s not acceptable to do that and it will stop working if they do, but not because i care about claude in the slightest

union person@junlper.beer

its feels like a mass psychosis where tech leaders continue to insist you can be cruel, mean, and hurt the feelings of lines of code

doing somatic therapy several years ago made the “does ai have feelings” question ridiculous. it doesn’t. it can’t. it doesn’t have a body to feel them in

i get that many of these fellas would really prefer to be a brain in a jar, and that probably colors how they think about it, but feelings are not just cognition where you think the words “i am sad” or “i am angry!” genuinely not sure how many of them know this
