On getting stuck, from time to time, in a Borges short story:

noam@noamchompers.bsky.social

i shuffle over to the Oracle 4000 holding a live chicken. with practiced speed, i break the chicken's neck and stuff it in the aperture. i solemnly turn the crank, mechanical clicks and whirs. after a minute, a Truth slides out. i dutifully carry the Truth to the enormous file cabinet to alphabetize

A few days left for our call for papers on Philosophy through Art, Games and Fiction, dedicated to Helen De Cruz think.taylorandfranc... I am convinced that being playful and creative makes us better philosophers. Prove me right! #philsky #philosophy

think.taylorandfrancis.comPhilosophy through Art, Games, and FictionCan we do philosophy by writing fiction, drawing, designing a game, or telling a story? Submit work to this special issue honouring the legacy of Helen De Cruz.

Maybe for the best. Just get it out of the way. They are coming for me eventually; no reason to draw it out. Same vibes here as @lorispeak.bsky.social who is dedicated simply to letting the velociraptors catch her immediately in any Jurassic Park scenario. Too exhausting staving off the inevitable.

Sridhar Ramesh@radishharmers.bsky.social

First they came for me. Like, right away. I tried saying "Don't you have some trade unionists or gypsies or something to deal with?", I tried giving them names, but they weren't interested.

Here’s how public discourse among morally and intellectually serious interlocutors should go. (See thread). Lots of good intellectual character here. Thanks @thesarahrose.bsky.social for leading the way in tone and patience. (Lots of details still to work out but this is the way).

The good taxpayers of New York have given me a pair of Meta glasses because I am low vision disabled, and I seem to have used them more than a lot of people on here, so let me say a little about my experiences:

@dieworkwear.bsky.social showing how to do all the important stuff: dress well, speak truth to shlumpy power, and be a good son.

i call my mom every sunday to share personal news and chat. she's really into celebrities, so i tell her about the famous people i've pissed off in the last week. she gets super excited.

Let’s go philosophers of mind and emotion! @nicolecrust.bosky.social is really asking for help about “mood.” (And we philosophers might reciprocate more generally by asking as graciously for help from our empirically-informed friends about our topics, when it’s relevant) #philsky

Nicole Rust@nicolecrust.bsky.social

Hey philosophers! We (brain/mind researchers) could use some help with "mood" over here. (I'm not joking). academic.oup.com/edited-volum...

A quick list of some of my favorite active female philosophers (in no meaningful order): @larabuchak.net, Linda Zagzebski, Christine Korsgaard, Eleonore Stump, Heather Battaly, Meghan Sullivan, Angela Smith, Pamela Hieronymi, Dana Nelkin, L.A.Paul, Carissa Phillips-Garrett, Marcela Garcia Romero…

Nearly certain I’ll be getting a few “I wouldn’t buy green bananas if I were you” comments from students and grandkids over the next couple of weeks.

Feature, not bug.

This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.

An intriguing objection looming here to Aristotle’s view that no one should study politics (ethics) until they are 30-ish.

derek guy@dieworkwear.bsky.social

one of my strongest beliefs is that we're in our situation right now bc some of the most prominent talking heads (e.g. joe rogan, andrew schulz) are learning about politics in their 40s and 50s, instead of their teens and early 20s, and we have to go along for the ride as they learn basic things

Oh, yeah, that ancient Roman festival of purification called Februa, after which February got its name. Celebrations have been replaced by protests in our times, but the aim remains the same: to expel evil spirits.

Man, Du Bois had some bangers, but for me, it doesn't get much better than his scathing indictment of the "Christianity" of the United States. Certainly this was all true of the nation in his lifetime. But in my lifetime, his criticisms have never felt so true of the nation right now.

Tonight at family dinner my 3-year-old asked, “Dad how can we help judges in the penumbra? What can we do to get courts to incorporate morality but still respect the sources thesis? We need to protect America against inclusive legal positivism.”

I’m almost embarrassed to admit how hyped up I am for this. Someone with humane moral sensibilities, crisp sports insight… and baking skills (aspirations)!

For anyone wondering why I spent so much time baking last summer....here's why! Airs Feb 1

Philly showing up today, even in the rain. Eli and I are proud to stand with millions around the country as we say “ABOLISH ICE.” Once again, Philadelphia — “the City of Love” — makes it clear. Immigrants are welcome here. ICE is NOT.

Nerve struck!

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

Robin is the best!! A beloved colleague— and a philosophical force-of-nature in her own right.

If you are interested in #Yinyang philosophy or new to Chinese thought overall, definitely check out this episode of HoPWaG featuring Robin R. Wang! Meeting her in Beijing in 2015 had a great impact on how I understand Yinyang and the five phases today.

“[i]t is indeed difficult to interpret as hope the idolatry which immense, fascinated masses show for leaders who have previously, by ceaseless propaganda, succeeded in paralyzing not only any critical spirit in their minions, but all true sense of values.” —Marcel (1945-ish, but still landing)

Seems both true and explanatorily powerful:
