I have been waiting years to figure out how to make this animation. Finally worked it out in #Desmos. Imagine 100 20-sided dice. Every time one of them rolls a 1, it is removed from the pool, and the remaining dice roll again. The resulting exponential decay might look like this:

Science folks...is there an explanation for this? I usually teach radiometric dating to 8th graders with an experiment where we record the temperature of hot water as it cools over time. The trend is roughly exp decay, but this year I tried to make the curve fit better. Why a fractional exponent?

Here is the graph, if you'd like to mess with it. Room temperature was measured at 21º C, so that was subtracted from the data so that it's degrees ABOVE room temperature and the asymptote is the x-axis. www.desmos.com/calculator/e...

The only answers I can think of are: 1) There is no "reason" per se, this is a coincidence 2) the interaction with the container makes a 1st-order approximation like simple exponential decay inadequate, and the real differential equations have this solution

3. Gravity causes clumps of matter to form 4. A sufficiently dense clump at the center will begin nuclear fusion, forming a protostar 5. Other clumps (planetesimals) will form that orbit the center 6. High-density planetesimals are more likely to be near the center (rocky planets)

I want the animation to show how chaotic the system is up until it finally "settles" into a familiar solar system image. Like I said, it's not a physics sim, it's just a helpful visual. I like the way it looks, but I want to make sure it's not accidentally misleading. Any comments? #EduSky
