Novel you care about 1 singular story, and maximizing it. Collection you want each story to shine but also fit into a cohesive whole. Balance stories complementing each other with also standing on their own And the collection is just doing a lot of the same things many times (editing/revising/etc)
How does editing a short story collection compare to standard novel?
We never would announce a project that didn't have a pretty finalized story. So usually many months if not earlier (which is not the same as saying the book is 100% done). Covers we try to have done a month or two ahead of announcement but sometimes (as with Twin Crossroads) that gets a bit tight.
Twin Crossroads was announced but it’s Wookieepedia page says the cover art is not final. I remember that from Crucible back in 2013 and that got me wondering. How far in advance do you finalize the story and cover before it’s announced/released?
Big question. Starts with deciding the tone, mood we want which helps define an art style, artists Next is what element of story - emotion or scene, etc to help determine specific vis elements. Then we just iterate and try diff approaches till it works or we realize we were wrong and start over.
While not explicitly planned - and there's certainly much about Tython's history would have given us the same purchase without it - the Aphra team's work really provided an opportunity to "yes and" exploring the weird side of Tython more. Which was awesome, and fit seamlessly with the novel's themes
