Historian of business and law, and the history of human cooperation. Writing on corruption and polarization, markets and morality, early modern smuggling, and the history of responsible businesses. Sailing in my free time. Check out www.davidchansmith.net
I’ve been working on using #AI tools for #education. Using Claude and Dall-E I created a proof-of-concept game about my eighteenth-century smuggling research. Even people with limited budget and coding skills can generate materials for #edusky and #history#publichistory !
There were challenges! #AI isn't great at game mechanism design, so have one in mind. Including accurate info about niche #history topics is another: I sent Claude to my published research. Creating consistent images is hard because they drift in style over time and the LLM reuses faces etc.

Most dictionaries define ‘dictator’ as an authoritarian ruler who gains power without election. In the 2nd quarter of the 21st Century, it appears that the bit about being elected might need to be updated.

I never figured out how to “gut” a book & felt it would spoil the surprise to skip to the end. Maybe non-traditional scholars—we who return to learning later in life—over-valorize reading for delight.
My advisor laughed at me, but didn’t show me a way to read differently. This essay shows the way!
