A new fMRI study just out on precision functional mapping of imagined and experienced pain, led by Michael Sun (Sun et al., 2026, Nature Communications). How strongly does imagining pain activate nociceptive representations in the brain? doi.org/10.1038/s41... Thread below 👇

6/6 Bottom line. #1. Claims from our group and others re Ce/CeA recruitment are sound. #2. Use unsmoothed data for assessing amygdala engagement, esp for nuclei claims. Be mindful of “artifact”/mixing at the dorsomedial edge. Axial slices informative. A careful, valuable preprint! Kudos to authors.

check out this very nice work. mariya was a trainee/RA in my lab, but decided for her PhD to study pain in flies instead of humans. she came up with some cool new assays and important discoveries.

Prokhorenko et al. find that astrocyte Ca2+ signaling mediated by store-operated Ca2+ entry is required for chronic pain and may be an important target for nonopioid pain therapeutics. Learn more in #PainReports bit.ly/4hsL6R2

Excited to see our fMRI paper is out, led by Itamar Kahn’s lab. Our grad students, Amir Lawen and Bella Succi, in collab with Darcy Peterka, built a setup for simultaneous fMRI and dopamine fiber photometry in awake behaving mice. We learned some new biology too. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Remember the qMRLab umbrellas at the 2023 MRathon Highlights party? We are taking them out of storage for an exciting announcement that will bring qMRI under one umbrella. Stay tuned!

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation where we remember the survivors of Canada’s residential school systems and the children who never returned home, their families and their communities, and the lasting impacts of this colonial system.

Wonderful interview of @drjkhokhar.bsky.social on a paper that changed his life.

Jibran Khokhar@drjkhokhar.bsky.social

So grateful to @thetransmitter.bsky.social for the opportunity to talk about a paper that truly shaped how I think about my science by @fowleruci.bsky.social and @paulkennyphd.bsky.social! They helped make causal sense of the association that people call “Mr. Big“ in the context of 🚬!

📣 Check out the latest paper from our lab out now in @pnas.org 📣 We show that nociceptive sensitization can occur in the absence of pain stimulation. We use the thermal grill illusion, and show that nonresponders show greater central sensitization (secondary hyperalgesia) than responders.

@mark-carney.bsky.social, you have such a good opportunity to dramatically increase scientific investments and recruit back all the early career scientists who have trained abroad after decades of funding cuts in our own country.

Endometriosis takes nine years to diagnose. That’s about to change. NICE has approved two tests: a saliva test reading microRNA markers, and a gut-sensor test returning results in 45 minutes, sparing women the keyhole surgery currently needed. buff.ly/QX3jHk8 #ShareGoodNewsToo
