Photos on my phone tagged “cycling with kids propaganda” - girls huddling under a blanket together on the way home from the park - hauling girls to a birthday party (with their bike) - wandering around the city with the toddler

I want to make a personal request to those of you who use a bike for transportation purposes to start taking more photos and posting them. You can do so much by showing even the most mundane errands with a bike to educate and inspire others. They're often more effective than words. 📸

As a transit rider it’s pretty great how every minute of my trip is under video surveillance at all times and it’s “🤗 safety and security 🤗” but as soon as one of those cameras can read a license plate, woah, this is government tyranny that the Founding Fathers could have never fathomed

Metric of productivity is LOC / commits / PRs Data is from January 2021 to March 2026 Can what we're looking at even tell us what we say we're asking?

Would be cool if more towns and cities tried to address this directly. Are single-day speed limits legal?

Kita picnic bike census: Babboes upon Babboes, several regular bikes with racks, two Mulis, and a Riese & Mueller Load 60 Curious to see how kids outgrowing frontloaders’ rain covers will change the distribution

Kita/school drop-off bike census: R&M frontloader, R&M longtail, 2x eMuli, Thule trailer, Swapfiets e-bike with rear seat, BTWIN longtail, SCOTT e-bike with Qeridoo, Triobike, Babboe, and a Nihola. And dozens more at the other rack. What a lovely mix!

What is up with Berlin Marathon pacers this year? The 3:30 guy just came up behind the 3:45 guy, and I saw five 3:00 pacers spread out across twenty minutes at least.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

From a note to a friend a couple of weeks ago "imo the reason text elemental is so good is because it captures the notion of something that is animate, but not conscious so much as an expression of the fundamental nature of the substance of which it is composed."

hikikomorphism@hikikomorphism.bsky.social

LLMs aren't made of neurology except in the most handwavey sense. They're made of narrative. That's why I started calling them text elementals: they're not human, they're most-likely-text generators we bent into living stories in a prose format centering the characters User and Assistant

Joined a local amateur sports club and competed with the boys one last time before getting relegated to masters divisions for the rest of my life. Went to nationals, it was dope. Gave myself an overuse injury, of course.

What are you doing with your midlife existential crisis? No wrong answers. Just trying to see something, as the kids say.

Hazy beers have gone too far. Twenty taps at a Berlin craft brew bar. 3 variations on a pastry stout, kind of a cool oddball flex 2 sours, 1 nitro and a few imperials, good options And I believe a full 10, *half* the menu, were hazy IPA/DIPA/TIPA/QIPA — and I believe *zero* non-hazy IPAs. WTF?

If you want to know why people get touchy around the helmet discourse, this is it. Elected officials who do not know the difference between different classes of legal e-bikes and who also can't distinguish them from illegal e-motos probably shouldn't also be writing bicycle helmet laws.

Central NJ Yimby 🏗️🚲🚇🇺🇸@princetonyimby.bsky.social

New Jersey just passed a requirement for helmet use for all e-bikes, including those limited to 20 mph. I think it will be a stepping-stone to requiring helmets for all bicycles.

The thing to remember about CDU is their top priority is hating cities and the people who live in them. Their plan for Torstraße is pure spite, comic book villain shit designed to be twisted into anti-Grüne propaganda.

Newly infra’d-up swimming hole in Kingston NY has zero thought to people getting there except by car, so of course the parking situation is immediately miserable and insufficient. Another casualty of American narrow mindedness.

American grocery stores apparently label normal (full fat unsweetened) yogurt “Indian” or “European” style now?

NYC ferries are blowing my transit mind. $4.50 for what feels like a super-express line. Incredible. Integration of both fares and other modes seems challenging — except bike+ferry looks like a cheat code for certain routes.

Where's Germany in these charts? Nowhere, for two reasons. The nuclear phase-out, obviously, but the country also failed to build renewables at scale, as we keep highlighting. Germany's status in people's (incl. many Germans') minds as renewables champion is a decade out of date.

I know "LLMs are incredibly capable tools but not thinking" is a neglected middle position but I'm still on team "don't call it 'thinking'". (It's fine in prompts – I'm talking about when we describe the tool.) Anthropomorphism distorts our perspective.

Ethan Mollick@emollick.bsky.social

If you want to read an interesting AI thinking trace try "I want you to suggest two poems that you think apply very well to the current state of GenAI models like you. Don’t just pick popular poems and back justify. Think hard about options first" in GLM-5.2 & Opus 4.8 (very different personalities)

LLMs are stunningly useful because they efficiently search a mind-bogglingly large space. Natural language as 2-way API surface unlocks fabulous things: "intuition" through recursive exploration, style transfer, small programs that supercharge the feasibility of many tasks.

Being Deep Blue for pattern recognition and NLP brings it into the uncanny valley for "thinking" and being a "mind", but anthropomorphizing just has too much baggage. I find it leads me to wrong conclusions and it's abundantly clear it's a frame that leads a significant minority of users to doom.

Got stopped at 6th street yesterday and was pretty upset about it. Checked the programming...IP addresses changed and werent updated. Easy fix, TSP is back ip and running. Even added some functionality to help WB buses. All in-house, and a quick response.
