Brent Crude is closing in on $14 a barrel, which I understand is bad if petrol factors into your life in any significant way. We can probably forget about "Over the river and through the woods, to grandmother's house we go" this Thanksgiving. www.cnbc.com/2026/10/22/o...

I haven't seen it mentioned in a while, but one cohort often blamed for giving us Trump, namely Baby Boomers, is dying at a rate of 2.6 million each year (over 7,000 deaths every single day). Along with the rural decline, it doesn't bode well for the GOP.

Rachel Bitecofer@rachelbitecofer.bsky.social

12 days till Election Day After the Blue wave, the thing everyone’s going to be talking about will be decreased margins for Rs in rural places. 2018 was about the burbs- 2026 will add in rural decline after years of straight growth. Go ahead and bookmark this tweet.

I finally got around to watching the trailer. Wow! James Bond, Led Zep soundtrack... I'm not a big fantasy lover but when they get it right, what's not to love?

The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. I love Gerwig and I know this will be good, but I’m cautiously optimistic that it will be great. (I still forever have “Chronicwhatcles of Narnia” stuck in my head tho…) [youtube.com]

(The raid on Ilhan Omar's home was the kick-off. They were digging for evidence to disqualify her from being seated. Go to minute 21.22 for specifics.)

WHAT'S UP WITH MEN? I strongly believe we are living in a century where women are becoming the dominant force shaping society, politics, and commerce. This graphic from Justin Wolfers may offer some proof. (source linked in comment):

I would substitute "simplify" for "disappear." In any case, there are times in life for reckless adventure, then security-seeking (wealth-building - you do your best), and finally winding things up and settling down (simplifying) to enjoy the fruits of your labors. Something like that.

This is just the steady, unfettered drip of the Heritage Foundation's objective to dismantle government programs designed to help the American people. It operates on its own timetable, adjusting as it goes to address perceived constraints. In this case, it has only 4 months left to bully Congress.

BREAKING WaPo: JD Vance and admin officials are set to announce that they're removing hundreds of thousands of people from Affordable Care Act coverage — claiming that they were fraudulently enrolled in the program, according to three people with knowledge of the forthcoming announcement.

The Autumn Equinox has arrived, but thanks to El Niño, summer's heat lingers on, which makes me grumpy. Even worse, Daylight Saving Time ends at 2:00 AM on Sunday, November 1, 2026 (or has that been canceled? I've heard rumors). The midterms are 42 days away...

The 2024 election showed us what happens when you take all the lids off America's sewers and toss them in ocean.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

I said it at the time (and before!), but I truly believe that American voters electing Donald Trump for a second term in 2024 was the dumbest and most self-harming choice made by an electorate in the history of humanity

So much for a fair midterm election cycle; it's now tainted. The people who believe Trump's pledge are morons, and they vote. If Republicans 'win" the midterms, don't snark at me that "The vote is the vote, man! Get over it. They won!" Buying an election is not the same as "winning" an election.

Matt Novak@paleofuture.bsky.social

“This shows just how creative and rule-breaking and out of the box President Trump is,” she said. “I’m surprised no one has thought of this before.”

Can we now go back to wondering if the 2024 election was rigged without being labelled a conspiracy nut?

Keith M. Judge@optimist-press.bsky.social

"If you wanted to corrupt those midterm elections and you wanted to use AI, all you needed to do was get detailed information on US citizens. And what Doge did looked like just what you would do.”

I wonder what economic ripple effects hit a local economy when a large cohort retires. Presumably, they're now buying less gasoline and other work-related necessities (dry cleaning, meals out, etc.). It's probably not a huge impact, but added to all the rest, it probably adds up.

So, they'll be rolling Mitch McConnell back onto the Senate floor in September so he can cast the tie-breaking vote on the new farm bill. The bill will cut SNAP benefits for millions, over half of whom will be children. Mitch and his GOP pals feel kids should go to school hungry.

This is absolutely sickening and should terrify everyone. SCOTUS has now signaled they'll do anything in their power to corrupt the midterms - anything. It's time for our liberal judges on the court to speak and condemn this ruling: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

In case anyone is wondering, it takes roughly 790,000 head of cattle to produce 300,000 metric tons of beef

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

Wow! Trump slaps tariffs on damn near everything, then gives imported beef a tariff-free boost. I can’t imagine even farmers who voted for Trump are OK with this. They’re already struggling, and now they’re going to have to compete with 300K metric tons of imported beef.

The real question is: in the Trump era, is a “reasonable probability of death” an increase or decrease in our standard of living? At least it’s reasonable!
