#WeekendSingles Good Morning from your jet-lagged *and* hungover NYC correspondent.

Goodbye my dear friend, I hope where you are now is filled with music. 🤍🤍🤍

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 15 - Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane Just one of the brilliant string of songs that appeared in their early EPs Thanks to the fabulous @olgalovesyuri.bsky.social and @geodrew.bsky.social for another super-fun challenge. ♥️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_AY...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 14 - Cyndi Lauper - The World Is Stone Always had a bit of a soft spot for our Cyndi and loved seeing her still coming out with great songs after her 80s heyday. This is from an album that also featured the twins from Bros & Nina Hagen. 🤷‍♂️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwc8...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 13 - The Associates - 18 Carat Love Affair/Love Hangover Released after Sulk, this is a perfect example of the Associates’ warped, deranged genius. That Diana Ross cover manages to out-camp the original, which is quite a feat. www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8Fl...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 12 - Saint Etienne - I Was Born on Christmas Day There at least a dozen SE songs I could have chosen, but since we’re getting towards the silly season I decided to go for this indie-dance-pop classic featuring national treasure Tim B. 🎄 www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSSg...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 11 - Madonna - Justify My Love Definitely in my top 5 Madge singles. The song was a bold move out of the mainstream, but she was rewarded with yet another international smash. The single is packed with bonkers remixes worth checking out. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np_Y...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 10 - New Order - True Faith Early NO standalone singles are all excellent, but for sentimental reasons I’ll go with this: I remember hearing it at the Hippodrome in Leicester Sq. ca. 1989 and thinking it was the best song I’d ever heard. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfI1...

#WeekendSingles No new vinyl from me this week, but I bought this fab t-shirt from Trevor’s friend. I think it should be our official uniform 🤓

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 9 - Sylvian/Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours From a Sakamoto soundtrack that featured just this one song with Sylvian, so hopefully it counts. Too beautiful for words and a career highlight for everyone involved. (And Bowie's in the film!) www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRut...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 8 - Everything but the Girl - I Don’t Want to Talk About It Always loved this and hoped they’d play it when I saw them early this year. I was into completely different stuff in 88, but was delighted to see it doing so well in the charts. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IttY...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 7 - Björk/David Arnold - Play Dead The lost Bond theme: released at a time when everything Björk touched turned to gold, this was later stuck at the end of Debut, adding to the album's fabulous randomness. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ep5...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 6 - Ultravox - Love’s Great Adventure Post-John Foxx Ultravox don’t get the recognition they’re due, I personally really enjoy their brand over-the-top synth-pop and this is one of the finer examples of the genre. www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5jV...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 5 - Suzanne Vega - Left of Center Another song from an Andrew McCarthy film (Pretty in Pink), this features the wonderful Joe Jackson on piano. 16-yo me felt *seen* by the lyrics, like I’m sure other weird kids did in 86. I’m still a fan. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YIB...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 4 - Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter An inspired cover of the Simon & Garfunkel song recorded for the Less Than Zero soundtrack. For me it encapsulates the mid-to-late 80s like few other songs can do. (Also, Andrew McCarthy in the video.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Txrw...

#WeekendSingles Having a boogie before going into London. Rich, Hi-Fi Sean is for you 🕺🏻

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 3. Cocteau Twins - Aikea Guinea m.youtube.com/watch?v=Du7n...

#WeekendSingles www.theguardian.com/media/2026/o...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 2. Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind One of my favourite covers, actually one of my favourite songs of all time. Impossible to improve. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDMC...

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 1. The Smiths - Ask "Spending warm summer days indoors, writing frightening verse to a book-toothed girl in Luxembourg." If you can’t relate to these lyrics then you haven’t lived. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoo9...

#WeekendSingles Saw Saint Etienne for probably the last time yesterday. Gwenno supported. Fab night.

#WeekendSingles I found a seller on Discogs selling insanely cheap pop singles and I couldn’t stop myself. Thankfully I was never cool to begin with…

#CDFriday #MusicSky Didn’t buy many CDs/LPs this summer, but when @philk282.bsky.social recommends something, I usually follow his advice (and I’m never disappointed). 👍🏼

#WeekendSingles 7”/12” miscellany

#CDFriday #AlbumAlmanac #BlueSkyMusic #MusicSky Dolly Mixture - Everything and More - 3CD Box Set Met all three Dollies at a film screening and had my copy of it signed.

Sadly, one year on and we’re having the same phenomenon in Crete. I keep checking that I haven’t grown horns or something. Same shit, different country 🤯

Last few days of holiday, decent view from our terrace 🏝

Introduce yourself with 10 acts you’ve seen live: Broadcast R.E.M. Sinéad O’Connor Blondie Jane Weaver Eurythmics Jessica Pratt Portishead PJ Harvey Tracey Thorn & Ben Watt

The fellow at the Brighton car boot sale was obviously a pop fan. #WeekendSingles

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 10 - Doctor & the Medics - Spirit in the Sky 17-y-o me was very impressed by the Doctor and even more impressed by the Brits sending this to number one in may 1986. I miss the days of novelty records going to number one and making purists mad. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrUo...

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 9 - Paul Hardcastle - 19 m.youtube.com/watch?v=00TE...

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 8 - Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance with Somebody I’ve tried something more contemporary (both GB’s Crazy and Umbrella had to be discarded for different reasons), but in the end I had to go back to 1986 for this infectious slice of cheesy pop. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH3g...

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 7 - Blondie - Sunday Girl Sunday Girl had the unenviable task to follow up Heart of Glass, a song so popular even your granny knew it. It fared well enough to hit #1 in the UK (on my tenth birthday), but your granny maybe didn’t know it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VWa...

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 6 - Tammy Wynette - Stand by Your Man Number one in 1975, almost seven years after it was released in the States: a bit of a camp classic and an enjoyable karaoke staple if one ignores the slightly problematic, trad-wife lyrics. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM-b...

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 5 - Adamski - Killer Ah, the heady days of summer 1990... I was a late (21yo!) convert to dance music, but this and Deee-Lite’s Groove Is in the Heart convinced me that there’s more to life than jangly guitars, and I never looked back. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtEN...

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 4 - Wham! Wake Me up Before You Go-Go Guaranteed to make me instantly happy... www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIgZ...

Post you from a different era in your life. (morning-after hangover edition)

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 3 - The Police - Every Breath You Take '83 My early teens were an age of discovery for me (and not just musically): the Police were one of the first acts that felt mine, i.e. not my older brothers’ and they still hold a special place in my ♥️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMOG...

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 2 - Billy Bragg with Cara Tivey - She’s Leaving Home Continuing with the Beatles theme: this was at number one (May 88) because of Wet Wet Wet, obviously, but Billy and Cara’s version of SLH is what I bought it for. Billy remains one of my favourite humans to this day.

#WeekendSingles Today it’s all presents from @showbizwhines.bsky.social who seems unable to meet for coffees without bringing an amazing selection of records for me. Launderette is one of favourite songs ever. Radioactivity features a William Orbit remix RIP

#CDFriday #GeorgeMichael About to start Satnam Sanghera’s latest, a sort-of biography of one of my favourite pop stars and have the soundtrack ready.

#BirthdayNumber1Top10 1 - The Beatles with Billy Preston - Get Back Just finished looking at what was number one in the UK on my birthday going all the way back to '69: there are some real stinkers. I’ll start with one that was at number one on the day I was born 👶 www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKJq...

#WeekendSingles #AlbumAlmanac I don’t think anyone who knows me would be surprised to know I have five copies of The Queen Is Dead. Electronic Sound came with Scritti Politti 7”, so had to get it. Also, couple of new 12”s and some summer faves with Cola Boy and the Coconuts.

#SummerJams 31 - The B-52’s - Love Shack Ah, the joy I experienced in seeing the world finally catching up with the insane, unfiltered pop genius of the B-52’s in the summer of 1989. Thanks to @yutzer-futz.bsky.social for the fun challenge ⛵🏖️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SOr...

#SummerJams 30 - The Blue Nile - Headlights on the Parade I was late discovering TBN, but when I did, the summer of 1990, I played nothing else. Hats is indeed a perfect album. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTUK...

#SummerJams 29 - Röyksopp ft. Robyn - The Girl and the Robot Incidentally, also the best song of all time. www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPqn...

#SummerJams 28 - Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want to Have Fun That’s what they really want... www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIb6...

#SummerJams 27 - Eurythmics - When Tomorrow Comes www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWzR...
