Tanforan, 1912 The then-closed Tanforan racetrack in San Bruno hosted many different kinds of event in the 1910s. December 26, 1912 saw Lincoln Beachey in his plane race Daredevil Edwards in a car. (Beachey would later die in a crash in SF Bay during the PPIE) #sfmemory #sfhistory #sanbruno

Castro & Market, 1958 A view from the platform entering the Twin Peaks tunnel. A Muni M-line streetcar about to cross the intersection, traffic all around and passenger waiting, just a nice dynamic shot. I do a lot of repetitive streetcar shots, but this one just kind speaks. #sfmemory #sfhistory

Whoops! Scanning a bunch of prints & there were quite a few showing streetcar accidents over the years. I have seen many of these before but I don't have specific descriptions for them. limited to 4 here but more on Mastodon and instagram. #sfhistory #sfmemory

Powell near Eddy Sep 22, 1953 Market Street in the background. Muni Powell Street cable car #509 on the turntable. The Douglas Building (Gray's suits sign) at right would be demolished in the 1960's for Bart & Hallidie Plaza. Carlton Koski took this pic 73 years ago today. #sfmemory #sfhistory

Ferry Building, circa 1933 Once called the City Front, it was the gateway to San Francisco, All transit revolved around it. this shot in the recent SFMemory.org update really shows how busy it was. I've added an annotated version of some of the things I notice in it. #sfmemory #sfhistory

South of Market Aerial circa 1970 Aerial postcard view east showing Bayshore Freeway, South of Market, Bay Bridge & downtown skyscrapers. Bank of America 555 California under construction at upper left. I notice something new in this every time I look. what do you see #sfmemory #sfhistory

Guess Where SF, July 1964 A recent scan from the SF Heritage Archive. The building still stands and looks about the same. (yes, of course you can look it up in the city directory, but give it a shot) #sfmemory #sfhistory #sanfrancisco

Sam Crow Portraits, 1910s Generally speaking, I prefer pictures of the built environment, but the Sam Crow negatives have so many fantastic portraits of people, that I include them on SFMemory.org because despite not knowing much about them it seems wrong to keep them from you. #sfmemory #sfhistory

Sultan appeared on the scoreboard tonight between the 6th & 7th (Giants up 2-1) next Houston batter homers to tie it #bansultan @sfgiants.com the dog is a jinx

Every time they show this dog on the scoreboard (going back years) the #SFGiants blow the game. Sultan is a jinx and very bad boy. #bansultan

King & 4th Mar 1966 View east on King Street. Tracks & trains of the Southern Pacific at left, the terminal at 3rd Street in the background. In 1976 the 3rd St Terminal was demolished a new smaller one was built at 4th. Now large residential buildings dominate this view. #sfhistory #sfmemory

Palace of Fine Arts, Feb 1963 The original, a relic from 1915’s Panama-Pacific International Exposition, was meant to decay. It did for almost 50 years, becoming a beloved landmark. So much so that the original was demolished & the replica we have today was built in its place. #sfhistory #sfmemory

I have a new favorite San Francisco landmark. And it's the symbol the city needs. (Also in today's column — let us know your favorite S.F. landmark. Doesn't have to be something that appears in a snow globe.) Gift link 🏳️‍🌈 🎁 ⬇️ www.sfchronicle.com/totalsf/arti...

Presidio, 1917 A pic of a man in a car holding a baseball?? 100s of scans later, same event & cars. Voila! It's Pvt Eddie Conrad who caught the "gilded ball" thrown into the crowd at a game between the Seals & Oaks. He seems very happy, but no word of what he won. #sfhistory #sfmemory #baseball

This is evidence. The ex-wife of ICE officer David Brouillette, who killed Joan Sebastian, says he urged her to stay quiet: “Don’t mention any of the abuse or troubles that we had in our marriage. Right now it’s important to make sure that I look like I have a good character.”

Thanks for all the love for SFMemory! I'm heading out of town (we have a house sitter!) Currently there are 11,496 images available on the site. please take a look, search an interest or location, and send me a message using the forms on the site. I'll get back to you! #sfhistory sfmemory.org

Redwood City, Anti-Napalm Day, May 28, 1966 It took a bit of work to figure these out. John Ungaretti was 16 when he took them. They marched from Sequoia High School to the port where Napalm was produced. Carleton Goodlett, Robert Scheer, & others spoke to the crowd. more at sfmemory.org #sfhistory
