Serbia, Brazil and now Israel (fingers crossed) voting against US / Russian-style fascism, authoritarianism and aggression. Carney and Burnham showing leadership for rationalism, progressivism and liberal democracy. Now we need US, French and German voters to step up to the plate.

Utterly crazy. Only in post since January. 12th manager in 13 years. But only 3 United managers have won the league in history. The entitlement of some club owners these days is extraordinary. I think United are showing how unsustainable this short-termism really is. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footba...

bbc.co.ukManchester United & Michael Carrick: Air of inevitability around manager's future but owners' problems far biggerManchester United's fans sang their support for Michael Carrick during the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth, but voiced their opposition to virtually everything else.

(Full disclosure, as a Liverpool fan I love the current situation at Manchester United, long may it continue and for the record Liverpool have won the league under 10 different managers)

It’s really weird to see these sorts of queues in an election. I don’t think I have ever had more than half a dozen people to wait behind and that is on much higher turnouts.

Judging 50 fortified and dessert wines today was a huge pleasure - so many great wines. There were some extraordinary bargains in the £20-30 range, especially the De Bortoli on the left. But I felt that I earned my ox cheek pie and chips.

I’m still trying to work out how, after phoning Hannah from the shop to check if we had any horseradish sauce and she confirmed we don’t, I still managed somehow to come home without actually buying any.

Are living conditions really so bad in France that people just want to burn everything to the ground? I’m very familiar with its traditions of protest but this all looks totally insane.

It’s reminiscent of a few days in London in 2011 when there was huge, mindless damage to property and then everyone just calmed down and we haven’t seen the like since. Hopefully France sees the same conclusion 15 years later.

Lambeth Council has become the first London borough to take our Butterfly-Friendly Council pledge 🦋 The pledge recognises the urgent Butterfly Emergency facing butterflies and moths, and sets out Lambeth's commitment to ensuring public spaces like parks and streets are more butterfly-friendly.

I had a small(ish) celebration for a big birthday at the weekend and brought out this trio with the cheese. Rieussec 2010 is an old favourite and incredible value at £170 per 6 in bond - seamless, perfectly balanced. Taylor 1994 elegant and perfumed. Bual 1987 one of the best wines I have drunk.

Former Labour Corbynites have found a new home under Polanski’s weak leadership. It’s going to cost the Greens electorally at just the moment Labour is finding its feet again.

Ian Dunt@iandunt.bsky.social

We know exactly who these people are: the type that made Jews feel unsafe in the Labour party. Now the same thing is happening in the Greens. Requires a firm, principled response which Polanski is obviously incapable of demonstrating.

A care home in the UK can cost over £100k per year, because shareholders expect returns. If you don’t have the money, you have to sell your house. If you don’t have a house, the council pays. Not surprisingly, the NHS is choked with elderly people whose needs are not being met by rotting in wards.

This is a very good Syrah but I think it has been massively over-hyped. You can get this quality at less than half the price in Côte-Rôtie. I regret buying 6 bottles.

It’s just crazy how dangerous it has become to eat basics like lettuce, eggs, chicken and pasta in the US. That’s about 50% of my diet. Throw in some sort of yoghurt contamination and I would probably starve over there. www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/p...

"The production side of the wine industry, which so desperately depends on wine writing and criticism, isn’t helping a bit...most of those wineries don’t even bother to subscribe to the very publications from which they are hoping to receive coverage." That's very depressing.

When the 67 Pall Mall Global Wine Communicator Awards gave their first prize in short-form writing to a piece clearly written by AI last week, it was yet another nail in the coffin of wine writing as a discipline.

I had no idea that cat ownership was not seen as masculine, but get me, with my cat-loving bucking of gender stereotypes. Also, dogs are generally unacceptable - smelly, aggressive and lacking in executive function - but I operate a friends and family exemption here.

Enjoyed this article about the growing number of men adopting cats, bucking gender stereotypes. Apparently Mamdani is allergic to cats, but has been getting allergy shots because his wife wants to adopt one. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/20/s...

This is very good. I have been working on capturing all official regions, subregions and appellations and as many unofficial ones as possible and am at over 4,000 now. But I'm doing it for website taxonomy rather than an end in itself. And I do love a good map.

When excessive AI use at my workplace began to alarm me, I didn’t know about the joining-a-sex-cult option for AI sceptics. Amazing thread.

SE Gyges@segyges.bsky.social

I'm back, I missed you all. Since this is an important subject I know too much about, here's a 🧵 explaining that AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult. I don't think these people should make policy. (1/?) (alternative title: Time For Some Cult Theory)

This is such a bad look for the world of wine. Even allowing for the possibility that it’s not AI-aided (quite a small one, it seems), the piece in question is so formulaic, anodyne and dull that it hardly showcases the best wine writing today. I just don’t know what 67 Pall Mall is doing here.

I guess I have always been a Zionist, firmly believing that the state of Israel should exist and flourish and that its security should be guaranteed. I also believe that under its current leadership it has become a rogue state and that the UK is right to do this. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Impressive. The contrast with many neighbouring countries is stark. Now let’s try not to screw it up.

New PISA data out England is now top ten in all three areas (reading, maths, science) and the second highest performing country outside of east Asia (after Estonia). This is a huge public policy success.

Just read a tasting note on a brand's website that described a wine's finish as lasting "roughly 16 seconds". I have questions. Who needs that level of accuracy? Is that level of accuracy even possible? How is 16 seconds framed as timing it "roughly"? Why am I even bothering asking these questions?

Europe is adapting to the new reality. “DNB (Dutch central bank) said that gold that is held with the Bank of England "is regarded as the world's most easily tradable gold," and therefore more readily available in a crisis than if it was still in the US or Canada.” www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukDNB: Netherlands bank moves billions in gold to London in 'crisis preparedness' moveThe Dutch central bank removes some of its gold reserves from the US and Canada, saying it is because of "increasing geopolitical unrest".

Corporate America enthusiastically backed fascism by supplying the German war effort against Great Britain up to late 1941, so the only people who can be surprised at the continuation of this pattern of behaviour must have no grasp of the history of the past century.

Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America'

macrumors.comApple Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America'Apple Maps users in the United States will now see "Lake America" instead of "Lake Ontario" for the Great Lake on the border of Ontario and New York. The updated name is currently rolling out to iPhone, iPad, and Mac users. The Maps app still has the Lake Ontario label for the body of water, but tapping it now says "Lake America." Apple will likely change the label in the next few hours. U.S. President Donald Trump last week issued an executive order changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System updated the database with the new name, and Google Maps adopted it earlier this week. As with Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, ‌Apple Maps‌ users in the United States will see the lake listed as Lake America. Canadians will see the Lake Ontario name, and users outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names. According to Axios, Trump directly asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America" in the Maps app. Trump announced the name change after the ongoing trade war escalated with both countries announcing additional tariffs. Once popular mapping app MapQuest refused to change the name of Lake Ontario, and its stance has caused it to surge on the App Store charts. MapQuest is the number one free app on the iPhone at the current time.Tag: Apple Maps This article, "Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America'" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums
