Eleven certified bodies now handle content moderation disputes under Article 21 of the DSA. None charges the nominal user fee the mechanism was designed around. New in @techpolicypress.bsky.social from DTSP's David Sullivan, Farzaneh Badiei and Jonny Shipp.

The EU DSA heard you liked box-checking exercises, so it put a box-checking exercise on your... well, you know. Out of court dispute processes for content moderation under Art 21 aren't censorship. But they're not looking like a great use of resources, either. www.techpolicy.press/the-overlook...

My latest (with @farzdusa.bsky.social and @jonnyshipp.bsky.social) on why we need to take a closer look at the Digital Services Act's out-of-court dispute settlement system.
The EU's out-of-court dispute system was designed to improve content moderation accuracy. David Sullivan, Jonny Shipp and Farzaneh Badiei of the Digital Trust and Safety Partnership argue the "fee structure intended to increase quality has been replaced with one that drives quantity."
If you're reading the Meta settlement and wondering about the age assurance/verification contents, might I suggest you first read this new statement from the Internet Architecture Board: datatracker.ietf.org/doc/statemen... HT @farzdusa.bsky.social @johnperrino.com
Very pleased that @dtspartnership.bsky.social has republished the @feerst.bsky.social piece that Daphne referenced in her keynote and the below thread: Your Speech, Their Rules: Meet the People Who Guard the Internet dtspartnership.org/media/your-s... No logins, no paywalls.
My keynote at #TrustCon yesterday was a heartfelt love letter to frontline Trust and Safety workers. I even managed not to tear up, go over time, or (I hope) tell too many early Google war stories.
One of the great misconceptions of trust and safety is that it is primarily about removing and suppressing communication. Thankfully @daphnek.bsky.social is putting freedom of expression at the center of T&S.

@daphnek.bsky.social references this great piece from Alex Feerst where he collected anonymous quotes from trust and safety workers #TrustCon onezero.medium.com/your-speech-...
Masterful keynote. Anyone in T&S who couldn’t swing the budget or approval to make it to TrustCon should watch this on YouTube once it gets posted.
Once again, @charlottewillner.bsky.social is giving a wonderful opening talk for #trustcon, kicking it off around the theme of "what did you want to be when you grew up?" and connecting to that to how much the entire trust & safety field has grown up and matured.

new report! with deep appreciation to everyone who joined us in Dublin for this event (which i was very sorry to have to miss).
Today, @thegni.bsky.social and @dtspartnership.bsky.social released the Event Summary Report from the 2026 Rights & Risks Forum, held in April in Dublin. More than 90 experts came together to discuss how tech companies can manage risks to fundamental rights in the current global context:
Skeeting way outside my area of expertise today, sharing this Boulder Reporting Lab story on the foreseeable clusterf*ck that is lodging for Sundance. 🤦♂️

This @washingtonpost.com piece on the State Department's inability to find *any* evidence of EU platform "censorship" and determination to insist on making a gigantic and disastrous issue of it is really something...
this part is my favorite: "We did not find anything,” said one of the people. "It was not politically convenient that we could not find anything."
So... the actual story reported here is that the administration set up a dedicated task force to document EU censorship and THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY. Not that you'd know that from the headline. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

Here's @techpolicypress.bsky.social with details on the forthcoming Presidential Decree on Brazil's new child protection law. Huge news that is mostly going unnoticed in US media. www.techpolicy.press/brazil-wants...
An important and welcome intervention against the Trump administration weaponizing immigration policy against technology research and trust and safety workers.

Important thread. One of the serious downsides of Bluesky's AI allergy is that what passes for nuanced discourse on this topic is currently happening within the dumpster fire that is X.
1. A short thread on a Bluesky phenomenon that might be described as "They are a dead-eyed cultist who must be cast out lest the heresy take root!" OP has blocked me for mocking them - I'd usually obscure their name but since they themselves were quote-dunking to demand someone else be blocked ...
To this point, political scientist @chrisblattman.bsky.social is going modestly viral with his embrace of Claude code on X, and it's like it never happened here. Not great!

@masnick.com: best case: more clarity and legal certainty, as uncertainty is as bad as a bad law. expand 230 and rollback FOSTA, have clarity about how it applies to AI

Great question from @jrhuddles.bsky.social to the panel: what are best and worst cases for section 230 at 50?
@jmiers230.bsky.social: surprised if we will still have section 230, given current trajectory.
Hello DC! Currently at @cato.org Listening to @ericgoldman.bsky.social on Section 230, noting how difficult it is to be anonymous online these days.
