I'm sad to share what I just heard from Vegan Life Colorado www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1... that Howard Lyman has passed away today. He was a houseguest of mine several times and one of the strongest speakers on #veganism. A former cattle rancher, he became the 'Mad Cowboy'. (image fr TVS Aug 1999)

It was cold but fun! We marched with the drummers, a physician and I spoke about the benefits of #vegan #wfpb eating to reduce the chances of breast cancer, and we shared my homemade soymilk yogurt with choice of gluten-free vegan toppings and blueberries.

I'm preparing for Stanford 1st/2nd grade #mathCircle on math of #voting. Several years ago I shared tinyurl.com/mathInstVoting and now I'm adding material about midterm #elections. Most of the unit is based on concepts like majority, ranked choice voting, runoffs, etc. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

We're in a unit on analyzing games in 1st/2nd grade Stanford #mathCircle. Last week students wrote about games they like & why - what a nice list they compiled. So many correctly figured best/worst cases for guessing a number 1-100 with higher/lower feedback! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I don't have good insight into geometry but wanted to challenge myself & my algebra students today for a warmup; I found a nice Univ.of Cambridge NRICH problem nrich.maths.org/problems/dia... that I solved via similar triangles. I look fwd to seeing what my students do. #mtbos #iteachmath #geometry

I'm reviewing homework in my 1st/2nd grade Stanford #mathCircle where we are analyzing games. I asked about what games students play, why, and what makes them fun. This 1st grader mentioned a game Hungry Hippos, "but we are not always allowed to play it because we all go crazy"! #mtbos #iteachmath

We’re trying a new restaurant Ajja with good #vegan options cooked separately. It’s in downtown Raleigh and the ambiance is comfortably inviting. We met the owner Cheetie Kumar when she spoke at the #JaipurLiteratureFestival recently.

Yesterday at @ncbg.bsky.social I had #mathisfun w/a gifted Kindergartner. In this our most recent session, we explored stochastic patterns & learned #PascalsTriangle. He was particularly engaged when I asked him to build Pascal's Triangle fr Legos(tm) at the end - to be continued! #mtbos #iteachmath

One of the topics in our current Stanford #mathCircle is #FermiEstimating. I love how this 2nd grader described estimating the leaves on a tree. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun #mathiseverywhere

What a cute response I got to a #mathCircle question for 1st & 2nd graders re: number bases; we use base 10 because we have 10 fingers so have 10 digits. What if we had another number of fingers? This 1st grader had an answer for 11; for 16: "I would ask my daddy"! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

We enjoyed attending the #garba dance at the Hindu Society of North Carolina celebrating the first day of #Navaratri (Sanskrit ‘Nava’ [nine] ‘Ratri’ [nights]) honoring the Divine Feminine.

In ChapelHill #mathCircle my kiddo led a group w/her #origami love. I worked w/my 1st-3rd graders on #FermiEstimating. Several est. bricks on a walkway, leaves on shrubs, people at a white coat ceremony, etal. I disproved one who said they go to 1000 homes at #Halloween. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I had a lot of #mathisfun with one of my 5yo students. We looked at counting including when items were missing, patterns including one where we included and discussed randomness, and partitioning. She brought a cool Lego(tm) structure and we discussed symmetry. #mtbos #iteachmath

In Stanford #mathCircle for 1st/2nd grade this wk we reviewed hw incl finding "Handshake Numbers" which some saw as Triangle Numbers. I love how some enacted this. One made a cartoon showing she understands-why with, say, 20 people, there are 19+18+17+...+ 0 handshakes. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I didn't know that there are event prediction markets. I guess people like to bet! It looks like one can bet on the midterms - at least according to these "quotes" from Robinhood, there is a 65% likelihood of a Democratic sweep of Congress in the #midterms #election2026.

I loved working with a gifted Kindergartner yesterday at @ncbg.bsky.social . We considered patterns, symmetry, and #PingalaNumbers ( #FibonacciNumbers ) then counted petals and leaves in the gardens. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I was so impressed; he's great w/arithmetic & quickly internalized "Halloween Method"-e.g., 144+89; two treat bags, one with 89 really wants 100 so friend gives 11: 133+100=233 (ref also mathinst.com/subtraction). All in his head he got PingNums to 233 till I stopped him! And knew 2 kinds symmetry!

It’s fun sharing math education ideas and doing some quick math at the table - teachers are great to talk and work with! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun @naturalsciences-be.bsky.social

We have a table at SciREN sciren.org/networking-e..., a networking event where scientists share lesson plans with teachers. We’ve met scientists, our friends at @ncssm-durham.bsky.social, and many teachers. #mathisfun and fundamental to science! #mtbos

One of the GEM avocados is ready and wow what a nice unique flavor- a bit nutty and stronger than Hass. I made some oil-free tortilla chips in my air-fryer and am about to savor this guacamole I whipped up from a GEM. #organic #avocado #vegan www.gemavocado.com

I just heard my proposed talk for 2027 Joint Mathematics Meetings of American Institute of Mathematics (AIM, aimath.org) was accepted! I'll be sharing re: #mathCircle teaching like mine at Stanford & UNC for special session "Math Circles Everywhere: From Classrooms to Communities" #mtbos #iteachmath

I love @caroljadams.bsky.social's work ever since I carefully read her 'The Sexual Politics of Meat' caroljadams.com/spom-the-book ... and then had the pleasure of meeting and talking with her about it at Tom Regan's Compassionate Living Festival years ago.

This was fun! Thanks to our teacher Joyce, our tutors Anu, Ollie, and PJ, and our student Akshu and her family for helping! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun #BugFest

We again had a booth as part of Math Maker Neighborhood at #BugFest at NC Museum of Nat. Sciences & enjoyed sharing w/so many families #mathisfun activities like Towers of Hanoi, origami, subitizing, estimating, etal. Thanks to teacher & TA volunteers! naturalsciences.org/calendar/event/bugfest-2026
