"But, will some say is it a crime to be rich? Yes, certainly. AT THE PUBLICK EXPENCE, or to the Danger of the Publick." An important lesson in 1748; seems even more important today. My piece in TIME, part of Historians for 2026, abridged version; full text to be posted online in a few days.

Univ. New Hampshire's library will destroy 300,000 books (supposedly) not checked out in the last decade, gutting a key resource. The head of the library has decided that actual books are no longer essential. Is Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451" on the burn list? www.unionleader.com/opinion/op-e...

renaissance painting when the renaissance is really fucking stupid

Great news: the #AAS - NEH long term fellowship is being reinstated!!!! That's the fellowship that allowed me to do most of the work for "The Lost Tradition of Economic Equality in America, 1600-1870." It's also when I began to consider Worcester for our home after retiring from Truman.

Also, he purged the Kennedy Center of a collection of African art that was given in tribute to JFK, but he installed this, from the Tony Montana Meets Saddam Hussein Collection.

This is great. Also fuck AI.

Teaching a favorite session today on #FrederickDouglass #Narrative — after decades of scrounging cheap original printings (1799 - 1832) of the #ColumbianOrator … I finally have enough to give one to each student & say, DISCUSS: What kinds of things could an enslaved teenager learn with this book?

"Is not practicing Jewish" is an old antisemitic weapon; they get to decide who is & is not Jewish ~enough~ to count as Jewish; every other Jew is thus deserving of the smears & dehumanization. Left unsaid is that The Real Jews™ are also dehumanized but in a "so sad you're going to hell" way.

"Appropriate recognition" would be impeachment and removal.

THIS Washington? “Washington, Washington [thirty feet tall, weighs fifty tons] Opponents beware, opponents beware He's coming, he's coming, he's coming . . . Let me lay it on line, he had two on the vine I mean two sets of testicles, so divine . . . “

Wow -- RNC video: "On June 14th, 1946, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, 'I need a caretaker,' so God gave us Trump." It only gets more unhinged and culty from there.

Great: SCOTUS slaps down the Missouri Sec of State and AG -- and the Trumpy fed district judge. A victory for Missouri voters and the (very) useful initiative process in that state.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court blocks a district court TRO that had through Missouri’s congressional maps into chaos. There are no noted dissents. This should mean that the 2022 maps, not the new HB1 maps, will be used. Background: www.lawdork.com/p/dueling-ru...

So, let me get this straight, the US illegally attacks a country, kidnaps its president, threatens its government with massive military force, gets them to hand over to US control a huge portion of their national assets, hails the billions it has already brought in and promises billions more...

Last time I checked that “voice” is supposed to be a vote by Congress (representing the people of the U.S.), not G-d and certainly not #CorruptDementedTrump

Trump lethargically lumbering his way through what the teleprompter is telling him to say, trying to warn the audience that at the first event he had a really powerful strong speech that would've destroyed them. He sounds like he's been hit with a tranq dart.

whatever magic Trump once had as a public speaker to non-cult audiences is long gone

Trump's pick for Attorney General all but promised to prosecute abortion providers who ship pills across state lines, agreeing to “ensure the faithful enforcement of the Comstock Act and other federal pro-life acts." That said, I’m not convinced the Trump administration wants that kind of heat

Seems a simple choice: Trump could die before the coin is issued, or his toadies will be sued for breaking the law. Regardless, it’s more evidence that this Corrupt Demented Jackass thinks he’s above the law, and is the guy the Founders feared might rise with great wealth corrupting the republic.

Also, besides other issues, it highlights how peer review and editing has been terribly undermined since 1980 esp due to fewer and bigger publishers cutting staff to make bigger profits.

this is like the literal opposite of true. the most fruitful eras of the modern democratic party coincided with periods where the walls separating political radicals from the mainstream were way less solid

Democrats became great by fighting the far left—and today’s party can learn crucial lessons from those battles, David Brooks argues:
