We need to be even more divisive on this issue. Maybe something like guillotine all supporters of positional play or something. There’s no way we can appreciate that both styles can be implemented in so many ways, both have their advantages and disadvantages, and hybrid systems can be implemented.

I only just realized that Puerta left Racing for Olympiacos. I really don’t understand the decision. Great World Cup for Colombia, very important role for a La Liga team just to go play in a much worse league. Huge step down for a player good enough to play for a much better team.

MLS Round 22 East vs. West matches this week: 5 East vs. West matches this season: 56 These last 5 matches between Eastern and Western Conference teams saw the East win two more games with the other 3 being draws, meaning that the East is now just 3 points behind the West. #mls

MLS Round 20 East vs. West matches this week: 1 East vs. West matches this season: 50 The only interconference match this weekend was Portland losing 2-1 to Chicago. Although the West had a strong start, they haven't beaten an Eastern conference team since FC Dallas beat NYRB on May 2nd. #mls

Commentators on the Portland game talking about the organic nature of rivalies as if this isn’t the most profit driven tournament in existence designed to artificially inflate the rivalry between leagues

My favorite part of this tournament was when the advertising boards displayed “Reignite the Rivalry.” Like if you have to say it then it doesn’t really do much. Its like when Jeb Bush said “please clap”

Overall, this was just poor defending of the transition and the cross. Really poor from Velde and da Costa. They both ball watched, leaving players, including the goal scorer, free. There cannot be 3 players free in and around the box in these situations. It will always end like this.

TLDR: - Velde didn't track back - da Costa didn't track his man or cover the top of the box - da Costa put himself in a useless position defensively - Surman took himself out of the play, forcing Miller to come across more than he should've - VELDE DIDN'T TRACK BACK

to the near post took him out of the play. Chara and da Costa aren't in positions to challenge for the ball. So when the ball gets headed out, all of Portland's players are on the right side of the field within 10 yards of the endline, leaving them unable to put any pressure on Kossa-Rienzi.

Next is the organization in the box. Chara is slow to drop back after the pass to the overlapping Rusnak, so he can't cut off the pass to Ferreira. Da Costa leaves his man to cover that pass, even though Miller can probably get there in time. Surman was a bit too wide so the chipped cross

Cross goes over Surman at the front post and Miller challenges de Rosario, leading to the ball coming out to Kossa-Rienzi at the top of the box, who finishes it. At this point, there are 6 Timbers players in the box and 6 Sounders in and around the box, 3 of them unmarked.

After a few passes, the ball gets played to Rothrock on the left wing. Bassett follows Rusnak out there while Bye defends Rothrock. Chara flairs out to support, which I think is the right decision because if Bye gets beat, he could have a free shot if Chara hadn't been there.

Rusnak overlaps so Bye defends that and Bassett steps to Rothrock. Chara still supporting so Rothrock can't get a free shot if he dribbles past Bassett. 3v2 in the box, and while Ferreira has popped off the back line, the defenders should be able to get there if the ball is played to him.
