The lone samurai, and the road to Reigandō. Episode 052 of Dialogue Tree is about Capcom's Onimusha: Way of the Sword. But really, it's about the protagonist of that game, what the developer doesn't tell you about him, and what that says about them and their games. Two blades, two sides. LISTEN ⬇️

Capcom's latest blockbuster takes one of Japan's most famous cultural figures and smoothes out his rough edges for the biggest possible audience. Is the end result a blunt and dull blade, or is there enough steel left to cut through the noise?

And so I decided that such a game needed 12,000 words and a load of music written for it. Does it make for a better episode? Probably not. Am I happier with the end result? Mostly yes. Was this a counter productive decision that I sort of regret but will likely repeat? Absolutely.

Why iron out these interesting wrinkles? Because business. I don't hold that against Capcom. They are a company that need to make money, and making a palatable, appealing product is a big part of that. I just think it's worth illuminating these obscured parts of the real world of their game.

The general game design is another matter. As with Pragmata, covered on episode 041 and to which this is basically a sequel episode, one of Capcom's best assets is their ability to take a big idea and make it work for the biggest audience.

Sasaki Ganryu (actually Sasaki Kojiro - Ganryu is the name of the island on which he was killed) was so well known that both he and the weapon he carried earned nicknames. His sword was known as The Drying Pole. He was called The Demon of the Western Provinces.

And so, I read The Lone Samurai, by American author and translator William Scott Wilson, the source for a lot of the research in this episode. It's a fun account of Musashi's life, with some lyrical touches you might not expect from a biography. It fills in a lot of Capcom's intentional blanks.

What's especially odd about Onimusha is that a lot of the history is partially filled in by collectible lore items. But these again only tell half the story. For example, one entry claims that not much is known about key antagonist Sasaki Ganryu. Au contraire, Capcom!

There's Okuni, the inventor of the Kabuki dance. There's Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the respected general and poet recast as a demonic sociopath. And then there's the protagonist, Miyamoto Musashi.

Capcom's Miyamoto Musashi is a fictionalised version of one of Japan's most famous cultural figures, respected and influential to this day. The thing you play doesn't tell you this, this being reflective of the developer's recent approach to game design, good and bad.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is an interesting game to talk about. It's set in a highly specific time and place and features fictionalised representations of a number of well known figures from Japanese history, but flattens and smooths the sharp edges of them. Why?

One of my most hated pieces of discourse. You want old Zelda games? There’s plenty. Go play them. I don’t want another TotK. I don’t want another OoT. I want the Zelda team to do what they’ve always done. Experiment, innovate, move forward. That’s how we have all these games we love.

it’s been fascinating to live long enough to see Zelda discourse swing from “oh my god these games are so stale please do something different” to “ugh fuck these open world games they should go back to making traditional Zelda again” in real time

I don’t remember where I was when QE II died, but I do for when Elliott Smith did. Other artists with flawless discographies: Fugazi Deftones Tegan & Sara You go. Don’t say The Beatles.

Me: Many Nights a Whisper is a top 5 video game soundtrack for me. I just wish it was longer. fingerspit: My new one has 50 songs. Me:

regarding the soundtrack of Virtue and a Sledgehammer; it won't be available to buy or stream at launch, but at a later date. what I can say about it for now, though: it's more than two hours and a half of music spread around over 50 tracks. can't believe we're finally so close to release the game!

Not being the dev, I’m afforded the luxury of not having to be so moderate with my language. You *should* vote for this game.

Penguin Colony is a vital work of confrontational art. A game that reclaims Lovecraft’s words and turns them against his own beliefs. If it looks like a gag game (cosmic horror March of the Penguins) from the outside, know that it very, very much is not. My review. www.polygon.com/penguin-colo...

Tell your friends. Maybe the outlets that will report this news will reconsider their decision to provide free coverage to Forza, Gears of War etc.

Look I don’t mean to be insensitive and gas myself up or anything here but I did just manage to take my hoody off and put it away whilst carrying 2 full bags without stopping or breaking stride

If I wanted an 82 year old author/translator to appear on the show, who has apparently no online presence at all, how would I go about that? I’ve already cold called (unsolicited email) his last publisher, with (understandably) no response.

Absolutely vibrating at the prospect of new KGW x new ACY

Starting work on a new game OST today and man, it's always my favourite bit Total blank canvas, going through a cool deck of references and influences, soaking in 'em, ideas coagulating in my brain, heap of mad sounds coming out my monitors... MAKES ME FEEL ALIVE

Toki told me after our conversation that she hoped she hadn’t “rambled” and that I could make something of our chat. As you can hear, she didn’t need to worry. Toki offers an articulate presentation of video games as art that justify themselves as worthy of exhibition status.

Past guest @pdyx.bsky.social’s excellent platformer Monochrome Heights is a year old and is on sale. I liked it more than Super Meat Boy, and I think you might too.

Patrick Knisely@pdyx.bsky.social

A year ago Monochrome Heights released on Steam! Today it's on sale! I'm planning one final update of additional content that I've been working on finalizing. That update should come out by the end of the year. store.steampowered.com/app/2336210/...
