🇵🇱's coal-to-gas switch faces a growing challenge: water. For the 2nd time, authorities have annulled the environmental decision for a planned gas unit. The latest ruling was on procedural grounds, but concerns remain over the plant’s water use, climate impacts and risks to fish in the Vistula.

8,000 people took to the streets in Germany to defend renewables last week. Proposed changes to its renewables package risk slowing wind & solar expansion while opening the door to more state support for gas power plants. 🇩🇪 needs more renewables, grids and storage, not more barriers to clean energy!

People protesting changes to 🇩🇪's Grids package and Renewable Energy Sources Act today are clear: expand, don’t slow down! The UK is considering cuts to heat pump grants to free up money for defence spending. Having spent £80bn responding to the last gas crisis, why cut support to get off gas instead of making polluters pay? The EU is pushing back against efforts to delay key IPCC climate reports until 2029. With #COP31 around the corner, it's up-to-date climate science that should inform climate action instead of negotiations being held hostage to fossil fuel interests. www.ft.com/content/39f9...

#COP31 needs to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels. Instead, its co-presidencies are partners in coal. Plans for new gas plants in Romania stalled while costs rose. Meanwhile, batteries sped ahead, with storage going from virtually zero in 2024 to 1.09 GW by Sept 2026, nearly hitting its 2030 target four years early. The alternative to new gas capacity is already here. bankwatch.org/blog/romania...

Europe is heading into winter with gas storage at its lowest level for this time of year in at least 15 years and gas prices at their highest since the 2022 energy crisis.

It was Bulgaria’s battery boom that helped keep electricity flowing this summer when drought hit nuclear & hydropower. So why is the EU still backing expensive gas capacity, like Germany's gas-favouring capacity mechanism proposal? Clean flex over fossil fuels! www.euronews.com/2026/09/24/b...

Europe’s energy security shouldn’t depend on fossil fuels, especially not ones from countries whose leaders threaten Europe. But in 2025, 71% of TotalEnergies’ LNG imports to the EU & UK came from the US and Russia. New @oilchange.org exposes the risk. 👇 oilchange.org/publications...

Increased ambition for electrification is good, but not at the cost of more fossil fuels. There is little evidence to suggest AI can lead to emissions reductions. A new report by @ketanjoshi.co and a consortium of climate groups has found Nvidia’s indirect emissions have risen by a dramatic 725% since 2020. www.euronews.com/next/2026/09...

“GAS IS A SCAM” say Greenpeace activists in Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. Plans for new gas extraction in the Khan Tervel block risk locking in fossil fuels, harming marine life and benefiting fossil fuel corporations like Shell & OMV-Petrom. More via @greenpeace.at 👇 greenpeace.at/cee-press-hu...

Coal phase-out is inevitable, but Poland lagging behind. Closing the coal units at Dolna Odra is a step in the right direction. Replacing them with gas isn’t. Gas is another expensive, polluting fossil fuel. The path to lower bills & energy security is renewables & a robust grid to deliver them.

New Q2 stats show both sides of Europe’s power system. ☀️ generated more than 20% of our electricity, the largest electricity source for the quarter. But heatwaves pushed up evening demand, leaving expensive fossil plants to meet the peak & push up prices. More renewables and flexibility are needed!

New North Sea oil & gas won’t make the UK richer. New analysis finds the climate damage from Rosebank & Jackdaw could reach £119–336bn, far outweighing their projected £28.7bn economic value. Poland is the 🇪🇺's last hard-coal producer, keeping unprofitable coal mines afloat with public money. After last week’s coal plant shutdowns due to water levels, it's clear: 🇵🇱 needs a real coal exit, with support for workers, and faster investment in renewables. www.polskieradio.pl/395/7786/art...

Firefighters are risking their lives to protect communities across Europe, but governments need to tackle what makes these fires more frequent, deadly, and destructive: our continued dependence on fossil fuels. Clean, homegrown energy? Essential for a safer planet for us and future generations.
