Let me ruin the suspense for you. This isn't 3-D chess. It's not even Chutes and Ladders. This is dumb monkeys flinging their own feces at those passing by because we were stupid enough to let them.

This week, NIH advisors rebuked RFK for harming #NIH and US science. Sheryl Gay Stolberg reported it. Then RFK posted calling her sources anonymous or corrupt. I'll say this hoping it does good: I'm an NIH scientist, I'm not anonymous, and RFK Jr is destroying NIH. More in attachment:

One day left to comment. NIH wants to hide the peer review score, not just from applicants, but from the program officers and councils who decide what gets funded. The comment window closes tomorrow, October 13.

Little know fact. Every time you hit refresh to see if your impact score came in on era commons, it lowers your score 1 point. But if you refresh past an impact score of 10 you go back to 90.

According to sources familiar with the matter, someone made up the numbers entirely, and uhhh,,,,,,,,

Earlier this year the scientific community successfully fought back on dramatic changes in Federal funding proposed by the Trump Administration. Now another RFI is proposing substantial changes that would damage peer review. This letter from SDB President Helen McNeill lays out the issue clearly 1/n

Oh I shd add: Deisseroth’s work was (say it w me!) supported with public funding through federal science agencies incl NIH, NSF, and DARPA. And I daresay few political deciders in 2004 would have been excited to put algal proteins in HEK cells or neurons. Scientists knew, though.

The person who thinks that he has the ability to decide which science to fund out of hundreds of subfields is exactly the person who should not make that decision. There is a reason that expert committees of scientists review and give recommendations for funding. No one person can know all of it.

I’ve been listening to the #Beatles albums in order to pass time during cardio workouts. I love them, but if you are killing yourself near the end of a #workout, having ”I‘m So Tired” from the #WhiteAlbum come on unexpectedly may be the worst pump up song ever.

I co-sign this great summary from @dereklowe.bsky.social . The goal is to destroy academic science, and these are the reasons. And all the “gold standard” and “needs reform” and “not high risk” stuff is transparent bullshit to hide the ball on what they are doing.

Once you understand that this is a model of science written by non-scientists who hate universities but love venture capital and redirecting money to political allies, everything makes a lot more sense. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/22/u...

“if I was trying to ruin American leadership in scientific research this is pretty much the kind of rule I would write.” Worth reading the whole thing from @dandrezner.bsky.social . I have two things to add to what he says: 1/

Good morning. Nothing to see here, just the possible end of American scientific research as we know it. open.substack.com/pub/danieldr...

I’ve just come to the shocking self-realization that both my science and comedy writing are essentially the same thing. I bluntly say a bunch of blatantly obvious things that for whatever reason people have sub consciously avoided thinking about. Ironically, I never caught that before myself.

Roughly half of intracortical microelectrodes lose recording capability within a year of implantation. The B.I.O.N.I.C. Lab at Pitt is hiring a postdoc to attack the mechanism on two parallel grant-funded threads. 🧵 (1/7)

I keep seeing how #Elon #Musk will be the world's first trillionaire with the SpaceX IPO. If you take the value of all wealth and assets, the whole world is estimated at ~450 trillion dollars. There are ~8.3 billion people. For 1 person to have 1/450 of ALL OF IT is neither sustainable nor ethical.

The good news is knowing IS half the battle. The bad news is the other half usually involves killing people. #GIJoe kind of glossed over that part growing up.

They published it at 412 pages on a Friday afternoon, the slot networks call "take out the trash." OMB-2026-0034 lets political appointees override peer review, ban publication funding, and terminate grants without cause. They gave you 45 days. They're counting on you not reading it.

OMB just published 412 pages in the Federal Register (Docket OMB-2026-0034) giving political appointees authority to terminate any NIH grant, override peer review scores, and block you from publishing with federal funds. Comment period closes ~July 13. Thread 🧵

NEW: A serious staffing shortage — of the Trump admin's own making — is delaying the agency's ability to send billions to universities around the country, leaving labs reeling in the meantime. “I thought we were at rock bottom”, a senior NIH official said. “We are below rock bottom now.”

🚨 Congress held NIH and NSF budgets roughly flat. Scientists celebrated. Here is what actually happened. NIH awarded 4,641 fewer grants in FY2025 than the 4-year avg. New awards dropped 14%. Over $1.3B never reached investigators. NSF awards fell 22%. The money was there.
