Why do Japanese men think housework won’t be automated, but Japanese women think it will be? Why is female but not male income associated with owning a dishwasher in Japan? & why has OpenAI suddenly got all feminist on us about unpaid care work? newsletter.carolinecriadoperez.com/p/whats-that...

I asked my third-year undergrads to use AI to read Mortensen and Nagypál (2007), so we could have a discussion about the volatility puzzle of the DMP model. It was a fantastic exercise - I asked them to rank the solutions to the puzzle and this was the result #econsky

No bias from me explaining I like one more than the other, this is just them reading and discussing the paper after learning the basic DMP in class. An example that AI can actually make teaching more enjoyable for everyone involved! And good to set them an example of how to use AI to read papers.

Results? Less than 5h of work total: picking a questions from their tutorials, prepping, cleaning and adapting my marking scheme, running he seminar and setting up Moodle. Participation was very high (2/3 completed all the tasks) and by their own account, they learned a few things! [4/5]

Why? Writing economics essays is different from other subjects + they come from high school with different expectations and levels. With large numbers, it becomes unfeasible to run seminars or give them all feedback before the final exam. [2/5]

#econsky may I introduce you to the basic DMP model graphic explainer for undergrads. Explains the intuition so we can talk about equilibrium wage and tightness without going into value functions. Matching function is a bar, unemployed get free drinks (b) firms pay for entry.

And that's another year of Probability lectures at EUI done! My legacy this year: a 1st year cohort that knows how markov chains work ✅ I'll miss them all, they are a great cohort, and not just because they put memes in the problem sets...

You are up to date.
