I first pitched this story in November of 2025 and I worked on it consistently since January. I am so grateful to DesignRoom for publishing it, to the editors, and to the many people I was able to interview for their perspective on helping bring to life one of my favorite games. I hope you like it.

I’m very overwhelmed by life right now and feel like I’ll never be successful, and that I’m letting down my kids and wife. So I’m reminding myself that I bought this car with an exploded engine for $800, and then I rebuilt it and gave it to my wife and she loves it.

One night twenty years ago, my pet cat had this sudden strange sore on his paw and he was limping around my apartment, bleeding and being sad. There was a veterinarian office on the corner across the street, so I loaded him into a crate and walked him to the vet. It was about 8 pm, not too late.

“Well, what do I owe you??” And he said “No, it’s fine. I don’t work here.” And I said “What do you mean?” And he said “I’m a janitor. I just clean the place.” And I said “Oh.” But I thought “You just shaved my cat, sir.” And being 20 years old I said “Alright, well. Thanks man.” Then walked home.

The vet said “It doesn’t look like it needs stitches, but I think we’ll put some antibiotic ointment on it and bandage him up. He’ll need a cone to keep from messing with the bandages.” “sounds good,” I said. The vet got the supplies and went to work. In about ten minutes, the job was done.

Cone of shame, treated and bandaged wound, happy cat. “Thanks very much,” I said. And there was a bit of a disconnect, like I was waiting for something and the vet was not sure what to do next. So I said “Should we go to the front and I can pay?” And he said “Oh, no. It’s fine.” And I said…

And I said “Oh hey, thanks, my cat seems to have a problem. Are you all open right now?” And he said “Yeah, come on in, come in.” He brought my cat into an exam room with me and he gently coaxed him out of the crate, gave him some pets, felt his bones and examined the cut with a light.

Then he said, “It looks like it may be a sore that’s become infected, but I’d like to shave the area to get a better look.” I was like, “Yeah, go for it.” And he shaved the cats paw and leg and examined it closer. Sure enough, somehow my cat had gotten a cut and it looked gross.

But the vet office was dim, just a few lights on. I peered through the glass front door and knocked on the door. I saw someone in there, and he motioned to wait a moment. About three minutes later he came out in a lab coat and was like, “Hi there, what can I do for you?”

Took about three years, but I managed to get my Shenmue discs autographed by the actors who played the character on the respective game discs! Corey Marshall, Ruth Hollyman, and Paul Lucas were incredibly kind! 🙏🙏

It took almost 15 years for Vib Ribbon to come to the USA. It's one of the most beloved games in PlayStation's catalog for many people, and it's one of the most inventive games of its era. Here's Vibri in Astro Bot.

Anyway, I love this game and I'm very grateful for the time that its creators took to speak with me about it for my piece. Many thanks to, @shawnlayden.bsky.social, Game Designer Masaya Matsuura, Lead Programmer John Belmonte, Programmer Anthony Carrico, and Project Manager Hidehito Kojima.

It shows the kind of uphill battle that so many games have ahead of them. Shawn's "soft spot for the weird" and his belief that games can be about more than just making money (although that's always nice, too) is the ONLY reason that people in Europe and the USA were able to experience Vib Ribbon.

BioWare had a contest that I won which let me (me, like, personally) name the enemies in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, which both sounds like a lie a sad kid would tell and is also my greatest moment. Anyway, it’s dumb that they’ve been closed.

I’m the coach of my daughter’s softball team, and at practice tonight many of the girls were avoiding the ball, flinching away from plays, jumping out of the box, cuz they’re afraid of getting hit with the ball. To convince them that getting hit with the ball is no big deal…

I had my daughter throw the ball at me, and then I stood there and got hit. I told them, “See? It’s no big deal. Hurts a little and then we’re back to having fun!” This was a mistake. I am in so much pain, and I might be a terrible coach. 😅

Freelance game journalists are so stubborn and stupid and absolutely in love with this dumb medium. We have to scrape and claw for every opportunity, beg for access to developers, work multiple jobs to make ends meet, and we do it with so much heart and love for the people who make and play games.

If you like something someone writes about a game, just tell them they did a good job. It's a little human kindness that means a lot. I'm grateful for every opportunity I've been given, love my editors and those who have spoken with me, and care so much about creating something good. On we go.

I try not to share work on weekends, but I was a busy bee this week. Anyway, read my review of Toem 2 📸

Toem 2 might retread old ground, but when it is this joyous, what does it matter if it’s not a reimagining of its charming formula? Our Review: pixelbytegaming.com/toem-2-revie...

So, no disrespect to whoever wrote this, but I just want to point out that games don’t age poorly or well. Games that weren’t good remain not good, and good games remain good forever. Sometimes a game you played as a kid was bad, but you didn’t realize it back then. It’s as simple as that.

Polygon@polygon.com

A lot of 35-year-old games didn't age well, but one Super Nintendo classic remains every bit as much fun to play as it was at launch.

There are many reasons I think PS3 is the greatest PlayStation console of them all, not the least of which is that it’s the first time we could play Vib-Ribbon in the USA. This is such a special game. If you haven’t played it yet, get it on the PSN Store now before it goes away forever next year.

I’ve spent the past eight months tracking down and interviewing some of the wonderful people who made this game. It’s been a lot of work and very challenging, and I’m not done yet, but I hope to share something with you all soon. 🙏

Man, why don’t these companies just realize all they have to do is start with “I have a cool game concept. Hey this might make a cool halo game.” Instead of “We need a halo game, someone do something.” The answer is of course the insatiable hunger for endless ever increasing line go up, I know.
