Our 7-year-old on deadlines: "When I'm doing something I like, time goes really fast. But when I hate it, it takes forever. So, if you really hate the book you're writing, you'll have ages to finish it." 😂🖤 Unfortunately for me, I love writing, so I guess that means I'd better learn to do it faster!

I've always snacked when I write. Nuts, seeds, chips. It comes from when I quit smoking, replacing one habit with another. So, a few years ago, to slow my munching, I began to eat snacks with chopsticks. Initially, that worked great...but now I've achieved a near Mr Miyagi level of snacking prowess.

Maybe spurred on by Tennessee's failed execution, I rewatched an Aileen Wuornos doco today. I think it's healthy to regularly take some time to reflect on the utter barbarism of the death penalty. It shouldn't exist. We should be better than this.

By day, it seems to be an ordinary Little Free Library...but at night its true powers are revealed! I finally finished building our LFL! Yes, it's full of kids' books at present (which was not the original plan! 😂), but I'll be adding signed books and a horror section soon! 👻🖤

If you want to be a successful writer, the most important tool in your box is perseverance. Successful writers aren't always the best writers, but they are the ones who turn up day after day, year after year 🖤.

You know you're socially anxious when Fitbit recognises your having a conversation as a bout of HIIT 😂 Yes, I can make my active minutes just by having an unplanned phone call. Go, me!

Here's to all the writers, pacing their offices, repeatedly acting out the action they're trying to describe, in the hope they can summon the word for that action from the dark recesses of their brains. I see you, and yeah, I do this most days 🖤

Hey, you! Yes, you! Would you like a signed spooky book from me this Halloween 🎃? I'm doing a big mail-out at the end of this month. I have copies of REMAINS, THE COCKROACH KING, WHILE I WAS GONE, and BONES. $25 USD per book (postage from Aus 🦘 included). Drop me a DM/comment if you'd like one 🖤

It's Monday here in Australia, and anything you manage to write today is a bonus. Mondays are tough. Coming off a busy weekend with the kids, maybe bad sleep Sunday night (both for me this week!), it can be hard to get your brain in gear. 50, 500 words - it's all progress, and progress makes books🖤

I spent last week working on a super exciting project I can't talk about yet, with people I can't mention for now, for something...that could have to do with movies. You might feel that no one's reading your books, but you'd be surprised by how far your stories travel 🖤

It's great to see politicians acknowledging the genocide in Gaza and calling out Netanyahu, but, seriously, how late to the party can you be? The arrest warrant for Netanyahu was issued in November 2024! The ICC had enough evidence 18 months ago, and now pollies are speaking up?

Me: *sits down to write* "Okay, 500 words today and I'm back on track..." My brain: "That's what you think, buddy." Me: *writes fifteen-hundred-word outline for a new story* Also Me: "Come on, brain!" 🧠 To be fair to my brain, I like this new idea, but now really isn't the time! 🖤

Watching the soccer here in Australia, and the Bet365 ads are all over the coverage (unskippable ads) 🤢🤮. Nobody wants this. SBS, stop taking the dirty money from betting companies. Here are some stats (first image ironically taken from an SBS News article)... #FuckBet365.

Seeing stock image websites offering AI image generation memberships is just totally bananas to me. So, we can buy credits to buy images that cost you nothing to make, were stolen from creators (that's what AI image generation is), and then use those slop images under a limited license? WTF? NO.

Hey, everyone! It's my birthday today, and (I like to think I don't often ask) I'd love it if you bought, borrowed, talked about, reviewed, or photographed one of my books today. I've also dropped the price of WHILE I WAS GONE to $1.99 through June to celebrate 🎉👻 Thanks for all your support! 🖤

Sure, a bad project sucks, so do rejections (I hate that term), crappy reviews, and no one reading your work. But you know what sucks more? Giving up before you cracked that fucking awesome book you have in you. Turn the music up, scream, break something, then get back to work. You got this 🖤

You can be doing great in one and struggling in the other. I've always been honest on social media about my mental health because I firmly believe that the more we talk about these things, the more honest we are, the more we can fight the stigmas wrongly associated with mental health.

I'll be taking it day by day for a while, as my withdrawal from one medication is hopefully replaced by some comfort from my new script. If reading this has felt familiar to you, to something you've lived or are living through. I hope it helps to know you're not alone. Thanks for reading 🖤

each day to be more shit than the last one. We're governed by idiots (being polite there), and when we head online, we're confronted with 24/7 outrage. It's exhausting. It's totally fine to be exhausted. It's good to ask for help. If you're struggling, please know that you're not alone.

You're not wrong, or weak. You haven't failed if you ask for help. My struggles have been happening alongside ENCOUNTERS doing well, more people reading my books, lots of exciting projects coming together. Doing well in your career and doing well in your mental health are not tied together.

It seems that changing from one anti-depressant to another is not a cake walk. It's taken most of this week to get through what was a pretty rough time for me. Today is the first day I've felt like I had enough energy to get back on here and face the world.

So, why am I posting about this? Why is it important? I mean, who cares, right? Well, I care. I care about mental health, and I think that sharing our experiences can help each other see that we aren't different. That it's OKAY TO ASK FOR HELP. We live in a world that, right now, seems to challenge

Recently, I've been struggling. Struggling to keep a positive outlook, struggling to be patient, struggling to be a good parent (in my eyes). I've not been sleeping well. I suffer from restless legs and an even more restless mind. I went to my doctor to change my medication...

I used to take sertraline (aka Zoloft, which can cause restless legs at night). The doctor prescribed me a change to mirtazapine (Remeron). I was told I could stop one medication and begin a new one the next day. Well, yeah, it's not been fantastic. This has been a rough week.

One for the Aussies today... It's okay to feel a bit shit about the result in Farrer. Yes, Racist Granny and her far-right party of grifters won a seat. Yes, the press will say it's over for Australia: Farage in the UK, Trump in the US, Racist Granny, here... But that's not what's happening. 🧵1/5

Fuck their divisive, distraction politics that sucks the air from the things we really need to focus on. And here are some of those things: 1. Tax the rich. 2. End homelessness. No one should be living on the street in 2026. 3. Actually tackle the cost of living and housing crises.

4. Improve healthcare access for all. There's a mental health crisis occurring right now, and not enough is being done to help. 5. Stop military exports to Israel. 6. Stop ignoring all the advice to help First Nations people. How many Closing the Gap reports have been wasted so far? 🖤

This doesn't represent some big swing to the right as some of the press and the far-right granny party themselves would want you to believe. Just two years ago, we told Peter Dutton and his Trumpian politics to get fucked, and that's what will happen at the next federal election.

Yes, the Labour government are shit right now (gas tax, you cowards!), but One Nation has never been more than a racist novelty party, and they're no different now. Actually, they're probably more openly racist now. They've never had a policy that's more than a few nasty talking points...
