There is no place for a gas giant at a climate event ✊ And still, today’s “Energy Day” at the Brussels Climate Week has ENGIE as the main sponsor. We started our day there to call for a ban on fossil fuel sponsorships on climate events like this one.

Can't help but laugh 😂 EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen says Europe's moving away from Russian gas towards "a more diverse range of reliable suppliers". Ha! I've never heard Trump described in such terms! The EU is in fact shifting from one blackmailer to another. euobserver.com/242252/made-...

Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

Saul Staniforth@saulstaniforth.bsky.social

Ash Sarkar: "The one thing the govt could do to improve the lives of young people is introduce some rent controls" Govt minister Jonathan Reynolds: "No economist supports rent controls" There you have it. Are you a young person trapped paying exorbitant rent? The Labour govt says f**k you.

And why is it left to the far right questioning the fairness of EU policies? Meloni in Italy wants Brussels to "relax fiscal rules for households and industries struggling with soaring energy costs, arguing that energy security should be treated with the same urgency as defence spending."

Today, EU Commission published its sustainability rating scheme for data centres. ❓Who's paying the most in extra energy costs because of the Hormuz crisis? ✔️ Europe 🇪🇺 But as we heard from EU President VDL in today's #SOTEU, there's no serious strategy to tackle this. Maybe she should stop taking advice from the fossil fuel industry? #FossilFreePolitics

This summer's heatwaves killed more than 35,000 extra people across Europe, mostly elderly and low-income. Von der Leyen's response in her State of the Union? "We must capture this market." Sustained public investment is what's needed. A market opportunity is what von der Leyen offers.

#SOTEU : while Europe faces social, environmental and geopolitical pressures, it's funny how the solution always happens to be exactly what corporate lobbyists have been asking for, and they already have more access to EU decision-making than anyone. Here's our take on AI, deregulation and climate👇

Wanna get angry/depressed? Listen to @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu's #SOTEU address. This summer saw 35,000+ excess deaths in 🇪🇺 from global heating-induced heat waves. Fighting it means investing in public services decimated by decades of austerity. For VDL, it's a chance to capture emerging markets 😩

🏅 A new EU 🇪🇺 record? 🏅 Going back through my summer emails I came across this reply to a letter we sent to EU Climate Commissioner Ribera in NOVEMBER 2025. The reply was JULY 2026, exactly 9 months later. The oil and gas industry gets the red carpet rolled out, civil society waits 9 months.

The reply itself? As ever, failed to fully address the points raised, and claimed the EU promoted sustainable projects. Of interest, we were invited to contribute to a stakeholder consultation. Will this be written, or a roundtable? Or is the roundtable reserved strictly for industry?

Heard about new fossil gas plants being built to power AI data centres? Maybe some PR about their emissions being captured & stored? Tip: Don't fall for empty promises from companies that produce+sell gas, that a technology they’ve been failing to deliver for decades, will soon make gas “clean” ⬇️

Please spread this far and wide, as stories don't get much bigger than this. When the government blocks even the intelligence services from telling us we're heading for environmental catastrophe, you know we have a problem. A very big problem. Thank you. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Despite all the noise today I'd really like you to read this, as I think it's crucial. Siemens directly benefits from the AI boom in another way: it provides gas turbines needed to generate electricity for new data centres. Despite claims they'll be powered by renewables, they won't. Look at industry proposals. Appointing Siemens' chairman as the EU's AI envoy means climate chaos!

🚨 Corporate interests now don't only have a seat at the table, they have an office in the Berlaymont. The appointment of Siemens chairman as the EU's AI envoy is an extraordinary conflict of interest, and will allow industry to shape the EU's AI policies. Read our op-ed on @euobserver.com
