If you’ve happened across my profile you’ll probably find me posting random photos from my morning walks and complaining about technology. My main “thing” is probably landscape photography (preferably involving trees) though - here’s a sample. #Photography #Landscape #Trees

Guess a new iPad mini is on the cards for me, the prospect of being able to plug it into an external display and use it with a keyboard and mouse is intriguing too.

I'll actually be quite happy to lose Face ID on the iPad too, as primarily a portrait iPad user it's been nothing but an annoyance since they moved it to the long edge of the iPad Pro, I'm constantly covering it in one way or another.

Tried the iPhone Duo in a store this weekend, it's a really nice bit of hardware but I'm not sure I could live with the nano-texture screen and crease as a dark mode user - it was _very_ obvious under the lights even with content on the screen.

I'm sure today is going to be a great day for anyone who vibecoded a PHP site and doesn't know how's it's deployed or how it works - getting hacked by bots was my first learning experience as a novice developer putting something online too.

The number of people driving past the "Road Ahead Closed" sign only to have to turn around is extremely impressive and very entertaining this morning. Why should they follow the diversion, they have jobs to get to and kids to drop off, the sign is clearly for everyone else and not for them.

I can't really get annoyed at people using AI to turn their ideas into reality because I was someone who discovered FrontPage and Dreamweaver, copied PHP I didn't understand from Web Developer magazine and turned my bad ideas into eventually-abandoned shit that existed on the internet.

I think we're just seeing the same again with AI, lots of people with ideas they can turn into reality on the internet or the App Store - for better or worse the internet is a mess again.

Granted it's easier for people to advertise the crap they've created now thanks to social media but I'm not sure the outcome will be much different - a bunch of abandoned shit and a bunch of new people that eventually have to learn how to do a "proper" job in whatever form that takes.

Of course, during this time I was told by people more experienced than me that I wasn't a real developer because I didn't compile the Gentoo kernel from source, but through fixing it all I did eventually learn to do things the "proper" way for the time.

I definitely went into it thinking it would be some TV-popularised, over-hyped pub lunch not worth the money, but I was pleasantly surprised… it was really good!

According to my spotty accounting I've uploaded ~1200 photos to various corners of the internet over the last 20 years and I've been taking photos for at least the last 30 years. I wish I'd focused on it more, tech careers increasingly take a lot out of you (even if they do fund the GAS habit).

So how many "my iPhone Duo isn't due until December so I went to look at it in an Apple Store and here is my review" podcast episodes are we going to get now…

Lol, the new Aqara U600 Smart Lock for UK doors requires you to remove the locking bit of your front door to use it, therefore invalidating your home insurance - good luck, early adopters!

The Apple HomeView is a pretty tempting WFH desk companion to be able to quickly see who is at the front door whilst displaying some useful information about my day. No, I don't want to do this with Claude Code and a hacked digital photo frame from AliExpress.

Seems about right.

Pretty sure people people going back to Twitter is a bad signal for the “content” economy. Fake engagement is falling off a cliff due to the glut of slop and death of Google search. Only alternative is build a real audience and these people don’t have time for that, so time to return to the cesspit.

If the price of fuel in the UK doubles from where it is now it'll still be cheaper to drive to get somewhere 100+ miles away than to get a train (if the train can even get you there in the first place).

Loving the Guardian's "review" of the new Jaguar Type 01 in which the "reviewer" has neither seen the car in the metal, sat inside it, nor driven it, but is very angry that it exists.

I caved and tried Temu-AI-Lightroom and it's about as terrible as you can imagine - it would take a team of real people with real taste to bring this to an acceptably usable place.

Finally finished simplifying my homelab over the weekend to make it quieter and easier to manage - from an overpowered TrueNAS server and three-node Proxmox cluster to a UNAS Pro and a single micro-PC running Debian.

It doesn't look like the cloud is clearing this morning so here's one from the other day proving that the iPhone telephoto lens is still the best lens. #Photography #Trees #ShotOniPhone #Landscape #LeicaLUX
