Lecturing about the first Olympics, among other topics, in the Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations class today. Also doing Göbekli Tepe and Catalhöyük in the Intro to Archaeology class, but I don’t have a tie for either of those topics…

Very nearly a disaster this morning – I almost forgot to wear this tie! Many of you out there already know what this means in terms of my teaching schedule each semester…

Teaching about the Mycenaeans in class today (hence the lapel pin with the “Agamemnon” mask) plus giving a free online lecture on “Homer, Hollywood, and Historical Context” for the AIA at 8:00 pm EST tonight (hence the “Trojan War” tie). 1/2

Class today is on Heinrich Schliemann at Troy. This is the closest I can get to a tie with something close to the Trojan War on it. You’d think there would be a lot available by now, but no…

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has sparked a resurgence of interest in the Sea Peoples. But who were they and should they be blamed for the fall of the Bronze Age? Read the newest ANE Today article by Eric Cline here: anetoday.org/sea-peoples-... #Odyssey #SeaPeople #BronzeAge

First day of classes for the Fall 2026 semester. Wearing one of my lamassu ties and a lapel pin featuring the mask of Agamemnon. Teaching Intro to Archaeology with 100 students as well as a class on Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations just for freshmen, with 75 students.

Just finished a long live radio interview via Zoom on ABC Australia's Nightlife with Greta Jackson, talking about the Sea Peoples and the Late Bronze Age Collapse...hope some of you were able to catch it! :-)

Doing the Assyrian and Babylonian Amarna Letters in class today. This is as close as I can get, in terms of a themed tie. Related good news— PUP told me yesterday that Love, War, and Diplomacy will be translated into both Spanish and German, in addition to Czech.

Finally enroute into school, after a week of teaching online. Today is Old Kingdom Egypt and the introduction of hieroglyphs, hence the tie for the occasion.

Discussing the Sumerians today in my History of the Ancient Near East and Egypt class, so it was obviously time for the Standard of Ur tie. However, teaching virtually via Zoom because of the snowstorm, so no jacket, but headphones instead…

Looking forward to hearing Steve Tuck here at GW next week...Those who cannot make it in person can attend via Zoom; register by scanning the QR code on the poster.

Giving a lecture locally tonight, as a favor to a friend. Time for my favorite Egyptian tie. Then home to watch the end of the Oregon – Indiana football game. Don’t nobody tell me who wins before I have a chance to watch it!
