Nice piece by @profpaulpoast.bsky.social that cites my @wpr.bsky.social column on how the Genocide Convention distinguishes genocidal intent from "military necessity" — just as its drafters intended after World War II, as @dirkmoses.bsky.social has shown. The language of "as such" was no accident.

Was the War in Gaza a Genocide? In light of Navi Pillay's Nobel Peace Prize, I explore that question in my latest for @wpr.bsky.social. The short answer: it's a legally high bar to cross, deliberately (and perhaps unreasonably) so.

"The 'never again is now' campaign seemed to be conscripting Adorno’s legacy for Israel’s destruction of Gaza. But is this use of his ideas accurate and true to his spirit?" @dirkmoses.bsky.social responds to an editorial in the FAZ linking Adorno and Staatsräson: thediasporist.de/education-ag...

Dirk addresses the changing significance of ‘genocide’: ‘There is no mistaking the changing winds in the language of transgression. It is illuminating liberal permanent security as genocidal, thereby repoliticizing a concept whose foundations were flawed in its codification in the 1940s.’

This is the problem with #genocide rhetoric. @dirkmoses.bsky.social has shown that genocide is the end result of permanent securitization - framing groups as permanent security threats. Such abuses are always a part of total war - like the ones supposedly needed to stop the evil genocidaires...

No, in fact it was. Likewise, the Vietnam War was not, despite massive forced displacements, intentional efforts to make the country inhabitable, massacres of civilians, and an enormous death total. This is why the definition is complicated and I, as a nonexpert, prefer to use other strong terms.

In the forum on political economy, Jonathon Catlin asks what a public debate about the Frankfurt School's legacy among prominent former students of Martin Jay—the "Berkeley School"—tells us about the future relationship between political economy and intellectual history. @joncatlin.bsky.social

Dirk Moses senses ‘an air of desperation’ in recent responses of the pro-Statsrason thinkers. ‘Their catechism is buckling under the reality that the German public—including even some functionaries of the German state—can clearly see.’

Very important point by Dirk Moses (shortened by me): "Germany’s fixation on the Nazi regime locks actors into a catastrophic binary of absolute innocence and absolute evil. Coming to terms with the Nazi past can't mean adopting its categorization of the world by simply inverting the value signs."
