As I recall, OBL was already on the Clinton radar, so I think we might have been more on the ball, but I suspect the GOP would absolutely not have rallied around the flag for a war in that case. I suspect they'd just pound on how Gore was weak and maybe behind it, etc. Bad faith all the way down.

Auschwitz is still erect and standing almost 100 years later, a monument to the depravity of men bent by hate and intolerance. Trump’s attempt will probably be swept away in a decade by crap workmanship, neglect and nature itself.

I mean that, yes, it appears that bounty hunters and other paramilitary types are being sought and recruited. It's a grim statement on how this regime is conducting itself, and one that's pretty ominous that a lot of unvetted assholes are taken off the leash as it were.

Hi everyone - is there anyone who can give me the name of a book or podcast or even just some blogs on how an espionage agency worked during the Cold War? And, especially anything that talks about private intelligence agencies? It's stupid, but I wanted to write some fiction from the period.

THE RISE OF END TIMES FASCISM My first major piece of the new Trump era, co-written with @astra.bsky.social. The governing ideology of the far right has become a monstrous, supremacist survivalism. Our task is to build a movement strong enough to stop them. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

I have heard very few 'American' jokes, like 'An American walks into a bar' sort of set up. Maybe Texan jokes or something. I fear that we're about to be starting to hear some very soon and I'm not super jazzed to start hearing them... but I'm also concerned that we'll have earned them.

There was a story by Turtledove about an alien species that invaded Earth, but the problem was that while they were 'advanced', that advancement had stalled at wheellock muskets and basic gunpowder, not death rays. They weren't ready for machine guns and jets.

This show is incredible. Common Side Effects (streaming on Max and/or Adult Swim) pulls a bait-and-switch where you think it's going to be this black-and-white conflict between an idealist genius and evil corporate/government goons but it doesn't let you off that easy...

They land, fire a volley and kill a few people. It turns out the trick of flight and spacetravel is very basic, and can be developed after iron tools came around. So, the aliens never had to develop very far to be 'advanced'. And they are nailed to a wall and captured.

And I think about that story, because if that were to happen - a FTL technology that was easily replicated - as soon as it were discovered, it'd be an international race to start building warships to start developing regions of space, and inevitably ending up in world wide conflict.

To add insult to all the other outrages - the betrayal of Ukraine, the storming of federal agencies by a gang of Musk sniffing edgelords, the fight with Canada - he can't even bring the price of eggs down. Worst. Apocalypse. Ever.

Watching Trump and his flying monkeys rapidly disassemble the pieces of the government along ideological lines as set out by a drug mad technobro, a band of christofascist zealots and his own sense of aggrievement and hubris is breathtaking in its suicidal audacity. They are really going for it.

I'm just some schmuck on the internet, like most of us. I have an opinion about policy preferences, and I like to think that I'm a little better informed than the average person. That being said - with the Trump nominees and the outright disregard of the 14A, everyone's hair should be on fire.

Every week is going to be like this. Just outrage building on outrage, as he blasts through every promise he made and undermines the nation by placing it in the hands of creeps and zealots. A lot of people are going to die in this nation as a direct result of this broken man.

Hegseth is being utterly dragged by Dems in his confirmation as someone who absolutely would turn on the public if ordered to by Trump on the merest pretext, is morally impaired by both addiction and his history of sexual assault, and lacks the basic competence needed to fulfill his duties.

And none of that will matter to the Republicans in any way whatsoever, so this will be the next DoD head. 70% sure of it, unless a number of key Republicans are visited by three Spirits of Defense to reveal their folly, so they keep the love of America in their heart. Then it's more like 55%.

I keep hearing that Trump is going to start with 'Shock and Awe' from day 1. And there are a lot of ways to take that, but I am grimly anticipating that this is going to be 'against us'. And while that will be bad, it's also going to amuse the same Pepe avatars and Musk sniffers, just because.

While it's amusing to watch many of Trump's picks implode on the tiniest amount of vetting, I would point out that the media would try the same rigorous examination if Harris had won. The difference is 'Is a drunk who assaults women' versus 'Performatively likes jazz'.

Now, no one asked for my opinion on what to do with the increase of AI scraping data from sources to make the products more believable. But, I think that, if you are a creator of any sort of content, you should probably insert some gibberish into it, just to confuse them.

I was deeply disappointed by the lack of nature/science/climate/enviro on many major end-of-year book lists—so I decided to make my own! Introducing: ✨🎁📚 The 2024 Holiday Gift Guide to Nature & Science Books ✨🎁📚 Please share: Let's make this go viral in time for Black Friday / holiday shopping!

Of COURSE, Gaetz was having group sex with underaged girls! We all knew this! The GOP knew it! The party is full to the rim with sex pests, grifters, oligarchs and crazy people. If he'd been a tiny bit more discreet, he'd STILL be an AG nominee.

I hate the fact that the Trump cabinet is a pack of unethical dilettantes who Trump caught on TV saying nice things about him while a gang of human anal polyps dismantles just enough of the guardrails to let them do what they want, but enough to spring on Democrats when it all inevitably collapses.

On a different note - saw an ad for a pill to aid in 'straightening a bent penis'? Which... ok? Glad the money we won't be putting into vaccine research is used to accommodate the specific penile anxieties of some people. RFK would be proud. But a side effect had included 'penis fractures'? YOLO.

And, just because it's That Sort Of Year, North Korea is getting a little nutty and antagonizing S Korea with GPS jamming and blowing up the last roads between them. Just in time to watch US pull out of NATO, then we'll reach Double Jeopardy, and the scores really start to change.

I have to admit, while choosing Hegeseth as the DoD head is... bad, the pictures of him with "Deus Vult" and Nordic Crosses tattooed on his body is not something I had anticipated. Or wanted. It IS, however, on par with the rest of this dumb decade to come.

I am led to understand that Elon Musk does not like Dana Carvey's SNL impression, but as he could be replaced with a bobblehead and the latest Catturd post, he should be flattered. However, a true impression would be having Carvey passed out in a K-hole coma, and he could have had a lil nap.

Is anyone else annoyed by the circuit of 'what the Democrats ought to do now..." that were largely absent from comment when the GOP lost under Trump? This man was called a dangerous loon by anyone who worked with him, and they're treating his win like it was an unavoidable act of nature.

Does anyone know where I can send a picture of my dirty @ss-hole to Chuck Todd? He did the usual 'Trump won and it's all the Dems fault. But, if he screws up, boy he'll be in trouble." As if Trump's concerned about winning again, when he'll be fluffing his pillow on the taxpayer's expense.
