Living the dream in Butte, America.

Butterfly populations have declined precipitously across the Midwest and other areas in recent decades due to insecticides, habitat loss, and climate change, but in the Highland Mountains south of Butte, Montana they're still swarming every clump of wildflowers.

I don't know who needs to know this, but there *is* an "I" in the Spanish word for team (equipo). Thus concludes my World Cup commentary for 2026. See you in 2030!

The wet spring and summer this year is bringing out a lot of color at high elevations in southwest Montana. This is at 9500 feet in the Highland Mountains yesterday.

What it’s like to be married to a recently retired person: “Should I run out to pick up another bottle of wine?” “No need, I bought twelve yesterday.”

The final moment of this evening's fireworks show in Butte, America. I took a ton of video and audio of the evening, will post a longer compilation when I can. As usual, the amateurs all over town were amazing. When it comes to fireworks, Butte is the epitome of the lawless west.

Seeing all the photos of the Hungarian Parliament Building online this evening made me go back and revisit two photos that I took of it a few months before Viktor Orban's second premiership began in the spring of 2010. Budapest is a great city, I hope to get back again.

I am not one of those who believes that history repeats, but consider the following from Herodotus: the Oracle at Delphi told the fabulously wealthy King Croesus that if he invaded Persia he would "destroy a great empire." Croesus invaded and lost--the empire he destroyed was his own.

And finally, the latest post from Donald Trump's Truth Social account this morning, with one of Stephen's signature extraneous commas, as well as some phrases never seen before on the President's posts, such as "Fuckin' Strait" and "Praise be to Allah."

In the middle of last night (12:08 AM ET), Mr. Miller once again indulged his habit of throwing in extraneous commas. Hey, it was late, and he's only human. (Allegedly.)

And then, at 7:52 AM ET this morning, after a few hours of sleep and a bump with his coffee, Mr. Miller produced this masterpiece: 118 words without a single grammatical or punctuation error! Not really a Presidential tone these days, Stephen, but impressive for a Republican nonetheless.

Those posts were followed by a burst of 4 text-free screenshots of CPAC poll results, all posted in a single minute at 3:56ET Saturday afternoon. No typing means no grammatical errors.

Next, at 4:37 PM ET yesterday, a perfect score: 0 grammar or punctuation errors! A minor nit, though, Stephen: readers are accustomed to being thanked for their attention to these matters. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

At 9:12 AM ET yesterday, Trump's Truth Social account posted a rarity for him: a post with absolutely no grammatical errors! Nice work, Mr. Miller; that Duke education is really shining through.

Next, during a 6-hour stretch in the middle of yesterday, Trump's Truth Social account posted 4 times. The first post contained a single minor punctuation error (a needless comma), but the other three had 0 grammar or punctuation errors. Nice work, Stephen!

Have paid no attention to skiing at the Olympics this year, but I am suddenly a huge Eileen Gu fan.

Just seeing this clip now -- what a perfect response. Sure, they'd all love to get gold, but it's still an Olympic medal. It's an enormous accomplishment and any sports reporter who wants to sneer at that needs to be laughed at, just like this clown was.

Felt like the dogs were cute this afternoon, might delete later. And for what it's worth, all three of these characters were worse behaved puppies than any dog Kristi Noem has ever met, especially that psycho bitch Nancy on the right, whom I fucking adore. #FuckKristiNeom #Iwouldnt

I never thought I’d see the day. Americans being told by the rest of the world to fight for our own democracy. We should never have gotten here. Keep resisting. ✊🏽 #SheShed #Voices4Victory

In addition to being a brilliant delivery of a timeless message, that was the first time a candidate advocated for (or even mentioned) gay rights at the Democratic National Convention. If every second place finisher gave a speech like this, we'd be electing a Democratic President every 4 years.

Brilliant analysis of where we are and how we got here, and applies more broadly than just in the US. The so-called resurgence of far-right politics around the globe is a mirage propped up via social media by self-serving shills on the right and cowardly doomsayers on the left. Fuck them all.

Trump has lost the culture. But what if the universal conventional wisdom—that he won the culture in the first place—was never true? What if our warped media environment, then Trump's victory, created an illusion of MAGA cultural dominance that is now slipping. This is a long one, so strap in.

These numbers strike me as inflated. Are there really three Londoners who would pay money to sit through Melania's life story?

Margot Finn@eicathomefinn.bsky.social

'UK ticket sales for Melania are so far “soft”....Just one ticket has been sold for the first 3.10pm screening on Friday at its [Vue's] flagship Islington branch in London, while two have been booked for 6pm.'

Between scenes like this and the public execution on Nicollet Avenue this morning, feels like it's time to admit that the civil war has begun.

I wonder what any of you would do differently in your lives if I said "yes, America is at this moment a fascist nation." Because I tell ya what, if I thought so, I'd be doing things differently. For starters, I wouldn't bother worrying about elections or candidates or whom to support. /1

After a year of listening to sanctimonious Europeans complain that non-MAGA Americans aren't doing enough to fight Trump, the Greenland situation is giving then a chance to show us how it's done. So far, they have released a sternly worded statement.

"We're gonna need you to tone this down quite a bit, the sheer number of plot twists and emotional climaxes and letdowns is just too much for viewers who aren't doing hard drugs." - the studio, after I submitted my screenplay based on this evening's FCS Championship game between MSU and ISU.

After stripping the US down for parts, our billionaire overlords have shifted their sights southward. Time for a statement of concern from Hakeem and a sanctimonious finger wag from Bernie before the circus moves on to Greenland.

Trump saying tariffs made the farm bailout possible reminds me of Leonard Cohen's 2009 Seattle show, when he thanked his longtime manager Kelley Lynch - who had stolen most of his money behind his back - "for making tonight both possible, and necessary."
