My students and I had fun this weekend rendering bones and pumpkins just in time for the upcoming Halloween season as part of my carbon dust workshop. If you’re interested in taking the workshop or my 5 week course on carbon dust, DM me for more details. #SciArt, #carbondust

Here’s a quick traditional pen & ink drawing of a human brain for #AMInktober week 2 organ prompt created with a fountain and 2 dip pen nibs, 3 types of ink, white ink pens on toned tan paper #brain, #SciArt, #AMInktober2026

Here's a trad pen&ink for week 1 of #AMInktober association of medical illustrators. If you'd like to learn to illustrate scientifically accurate skulls, join me next week for my new online skull drawing course. lnkd.in/gwBp8kzy #SciArt, #skulls, #walrus

I’ll be offering my online carbon dust course and workshop this Fall for the Lyme Art Association. Learn the century old technique of carbon dust which combines drawing and ‘painting’ using a dry brush to apply layers of carbon dust to achieve realistic 3D illustrations. #SciArt

I created this series of illustrations showing variant branching patterns for recurrent motor branch of median nerve (RMN). Understanding these subtle differences is critical in preventing iatrogenic injury. Thanks to Dr. L. Van Der Putten and Dr. R. Feitz to depict their research. #SciArt #MedArt

I’m excited about teaching an new online skull drawing course next week for Lyme Art Association Natural Science Illustration Program. Students will use traditional media on toned paper to create scientifically accurate skull illustrations. #SciArt, #VertebrateAnatomy, #AnimalAnatomy, #skull

It’s Penguin Awareness Day! Here’s a diving Emperor Penguin showing off some of its amazing anatomical adaptations that allow it to survive and thrive extreme frigid environments. These birds are super cool aquatic avian dinosaurs! #sciart,  #penguin, #PenguinAwarenessDay #anatomy #AnimalAnatomy

I’m excited about teaching a new online skull drawing course in March for Lyme Art Association Natural Science Illustration Program. Students will use traditional media on toned paper to create scientifically accurate skull illustrations. #SciArt, #VertebrateAnatomy, #AnimalAnatomy, #anatomy, #skull

My in-depth 6 week carbon dust course starts this week and there are spots available. If you prefer an intro to this technique, I’m offering a one day workshop in February. These online courses are offered through the Lyme Art Association's Natural Science Illustration Program #SciArt, #CarbonDust

Happy National Bird Day! Today we appreciate our feathered friends and raise awareness about their protection. A bird in flight is poetry in motion. #NationalBirdDay #SciArt #SciComm #VizSciComm #bird

It’s that time of year again when I’d like to share my annual scientific holiday card. I’ve been wanting to create a card depicting Ice Megafauna and connect it with the holiday season. Here’s what I came up with … Happy holidays and all the best for the new year! #SciArt #PaleoArt #Anatomy #mammoth

Today is National/World Walrus Day! These semi-aquatic mammals, which are a type of seal, share similar bones with humans. Their specialized forelimbs have evolved for swimming. #SciArt #SciComm #VizSciComm, #walrus, #NationalWalrusDay #anatomy #ComparativeAnatomy

I just completed my carbon dust course offered by the Lyme Art Association. Walrus mandible which is still in progress. If you’re interested in learning this technique, I’ll be offering a 6 week course and a one day workshop starting in the new January. Stay tuned for more details. #SciArt

In the second last week for my carbon dust course offered by the Lyme Art Association Natural Science Illustration Program, students had their choice of surface and subject for their final project. I joined them and illustrated a walrus skull which is still in progress #SciArt, #CarbonDust #walrus

I had my students recreate an old master carbon dust illustration. I copied this surgical illustration originally created by Russell Drake in 1931 as a demo for my carbon dust course offered by the @lymeartassocation Natural Science Illustration Program. #SciArt, #MedArt  #CarbonDust

Happy Halloween! To get into the Halloween spirit, I created this warty pumpkin illustration as a demo for my carbon dust course offered by the Lyme Art Association Natural Science Illustration Program. #SciArt, #NaturalScienceIllustration #CarbonDust

It’s Reptile Awareness Day! An annual day dedicated to raising public awareness about the importance of reptiles, which includes snakes, lizards, crocodiles, and turtles, to promote their importance and conservation. #sciart, #reptile, #ReptileAwarenessDay #anatomy

Happy [belated] National Fossil Day! Before CT scanning and photogrammetry, fossil were hand drawn like this series of traditional carbon dust illustrations. I miss those days. Photos of my illustrations alongside the actual fossils #NationalFossilDay, #SciArt, #PaleoArt, #paleontology, #CarbonDust

It’s #WorldAnatomyDay today. Here’s an illustration depicting the anatomy of antlers. Fall is deer breeding season which is a time when antlers harden for buck’s to use in fighting and establishing dominance. #WorldAnatomyDay, #anatomy, #SciArt, #antler #deer

One week until my carbon dust course starts. There are still some spots available. This technique combines drawing and ‘painting’ using a dry brush to apply layers of ground dust to achieve realistic 3D illustrations. #SciArt, #NaturalScienceIllustration #CarbonDust

Cassowaries Have Their Day! World Cassowary Day draws attention and awareness about these amazing large flightless birds from Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and NE Australia. Here’s the skull of a Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius). #SciArt #SciComm #cassowary, #WorldCassowaryDay, #skull

Today is World Rhino Day! Sumatran rhinos are the smallest of all rhinos. They are also one of the rarest and most endangered mammals in the world with fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild.  #rhino, #sciart, #WorldRhinoDay, #scientificillustration

I’m excited about teaching an online carbon dust course this Fall for the Lyme Art Association's Natural Science Illustration Program. Learn this century old technique which can be used to depict many natural science subjects. lnkd.in/gS8Jsmwj #SciArt, #CarbonDust

Today is International Armadillo Day! Even these amazing mammals share similar bones with humans, their specialized forelimbs have evolved for digging. #SciArt #SciComm #VizSciComm, #armadillo, #InternationalArmadilloDay #anatomy

I’m excited about teaching an online vertebrate anatomy course this Fall offered by the @yalepeabody . Students will study, compare and sketch the skeletons and superficial muscles of various vertebrates. #SciArt, #VertebrateAnatomy, #AnimalAnatomy, #anatomy

Spotted in the wild! While I was creating this Great White Shark illustration for BioRender, I wondered how it would be used in the future. It’s great to see it in a peer-reviewed publication. This interesting research quantifies growth changes in white sharks to aid in their conservation. #SciArt

Happy 573rd Birthday Leonardo! Leonardo is one of my heroes for many reasons but especially for his medical and scientific illustrations. If published during his lifetime or shortly thereafter, instead of in the late 1800s, his anatomical works would have advanced medicine by a couple of centuries.

Happy International Beaver Day. #InternationslBeaverlDay #SciArt #SciComm #VizSciComm #anatomy #AnimalAnatomy #skull This illustration was created for my book, The Dissection of Vertebrates. The fourth edition, which is currently in the works, will have many updates and plenty of new content.
