Complete tangent, but I think there’s a number of reasons that fatfurs like myself are drawn to this as a positive fantasy, and’s it’s because we’re fucking TIRED. It looks like a scenario where we can finally stop working in daily precarity. Where we can just be allowed to be cared for.

Basically, I look at WALL-E and think “damn, look at the level of care and accessibility given to large bodies, and disability in general, the post-scarcity, and the clear elimination of a need to work for capitalists”. In a post-collapse world, they think this is what the dystopia will look like??

“Life is too frictionless”, is a weird one I hear sometimes, and I think “tell that to a disabled person. Life is nothing BUT friction, people are struggling.” We want POSITIVE friction. I think “damn, if I could rest, I could have time for constructive pursuits, I could WRITE, I could THINK.”

I want people to be allowed to be fat, to be neurodivergent, I want to be cared for, accomodated. Mostly because that means we’d be living in a world where that kind of care is possible, where disabled people have dignity. I want to have space to breathe, to think, when capitalism isn’t killing us.

We’ve got constant reminders in this community that people are barely scraping by, that our comrades are struggling, that disabled and queer and marginalized people are dying. So “no more toil, you can rest, your every need is attended to, your body is pampered” feels like a transgressive fantasy.

A take: the “WALL-E human” is a liberally-acceptable spin on “societal degeneracy”. It speaks to the same anxieties felt by would-be fascists (we’re too soft, too pampered, “weak men = hard times”). Life in the post-AI, media-coddled era has also shown that fat people have it WORSE, not better.

Meanwhile, the equivalent real world forces that it’s warning about (AI reliance, loss of critical thinking, resource hoarding) have resulted in a world that reinforces existing ableism, that idolizes the fascist conception of a perfect human body, that increases toil and suffering for the many.

Basically if the WALL-E collapse scenario happens, nobody who’s body looks anything like the humans in the movie will be allowed to survive. They’ll be systematically discarded, like any disabled person. The AI belongs to the fascists. Liberals just think “fat and stupid” is good visual shorthand.
