With Vannacci’s Futuro Nazionale competing for the same voters, Meloni and Salvini will keep up the NOISE on migration and law and order... Meanwhile, the quotas for regular migration will quietly stay high. Just don't talk about it. Quotas? Who said quotas? 🤫

Both La Stampa & Repubblica report a phone call that has taken place btw Meloni & Salvini in which PM is said to have asked him to keep quiet about Ukraine-related issues. The cabinet is expected to approve a new "package of support" for Ukraine before Christmas. So, I was wrong: she did read it! 😆

Well, they certainly got me this time... I genuinely believed the Messina bridge would be completed in, say, two years at most. Damn

Even Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, a Lega party colleague of Salvini, has thrown cold water on the Messina Strait bridge project. At Lega's Congress he said, "Politics is the art of the possible, not the impossible. There are constraints. Being aware of this means being politically mature."

Having held this "Extraordinary Congress", Salvini can now expel any internal opponents who says anything he doesn't like to the press from now on... Which, of course, was the point all along..

Salvini confirmed as League leader. Thread about the Congress below.

The Lega’s Extraordinary Congress ends today in Milan. Slogan: “Di lotta e di governo”, the old idea of a party that both stirs the streets and holds power. Yet the days of keeping "one foot in and one foot out of govt" are long gone. Meloni has kept Salvini on a tight leash in the last 4 years.

Can he win? Almost certainly not. Delegates are the same ones who acclaimed Salvini in Florence, 120 of 170 Lombard delegates signed for him already, and one projection has it at 80-20. The real story is the size of the dissent: Garavaglia’s camp hopes for ~30%.

Salvini maintains good grip on party (& those in positions of responsibility within it), despite having failed so clearly in recent years, most recently by helping to create a phenomenon (the Vannacci-craze) he could not control Results expected later this afternoon. Don't hold your breath. /END/

This would mean kissing good-bye to the key ideas behind the shelving of the Northern League and the creation of the "League for Salvini Premier" in 2017 - that is the creation of a nationalist, Italy-wide party wishing to secure the support of most radical right, nationalist voters.

Garavaglia's "northern wing" also backs a CDU-CSU style model, Bavaria-like, giving the Lega’s northern branches FAR more autonomy within the party – an idea Luca Zaia has long championed. Garavaglia also insisted the vote be secret, so quiet dissenters can finally be counted.

His pitch: “The Lega is not far-right” – it’s federalist, the party of the territories; The "Northern Question" is a non-negotiable pillar; Full delivery of regional autonomy and fiscal federalism as the top government priority; Put the self-employed and SMEs back at the centre.

The backdrop: Salvini's annus horribilis. Vannacci, whom Salvini made deputy leader of the party to exploit his media exposure (thank you RAI, thank you Mediaset), clashed with the party's northern (pro regionalism) old guard, then quit to launch his personal vehicle: Futuro Nazionale.

And that is very much the problem today: What is the point of the League? No longer the mouthpiece of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the north (that is: entirely focused on regional autonomy). Now competing as a nativist party with both Brothers of Italy & Futuro Nazionale...

Then Milan, 17–18 Oct. Circa 80% of the 200+ detained by police were minors. The official response: a judge calls social media a “detonator” of violence. That may well be the case, but: housing, wages, future prospects, prices? All footnotes.

A generation with 17% employment, rising rents, left feeling that migration is the only option... does not need TikTok to be angry. The risk is to let everyone completely ignore the question: what does it mean to be 16 in Italy today?

Expect plenty of initiatives in weeks to come. Meanwhile, the elections approach and the left wing "potential" alliance remains just that... potential. No common platform, no candidate for PM and no agreement on how to produce a platform or find a candidate.

I spoke with Delo about the Meloni government’s latest security decree—its 6th—and the Prime Minister's need to be seen taking action. While this government may be stable, it has hardly been transformational, and even right-wing voters can see that. In Slovenian: www.delo.si/novice/svet/...

This is such a common trick in Italy🥱. Flip the script. If you start spreading rumours about the journalist, it won't be long before the average person - who rarely follows political developments closely - loses track of who is accusing whom. Reform remains the most European of UK parties.
