Pugin’s St Giles Cheadle, Staffs, 1841-6. On one hand, turning back the clock to the Catholic Middle Ages. On another, a blueprint for a generation of Anglican churches of the High Victorian era.

The C6 #mosaics of S. Vitale in #Ravenna are often read as a transition from classical to #Christian visual language, but they are also highly polemical. The lunette’s Old Testament scenes operate as assertions of theological orthodoxy for #MosaicMonday. #AncientBluesky 🏺🧵

I have just returned from an inspiring conference at @rug.nl, where two @univie.ac.at students gave brilliant poster presentations. I hope I can see where their future paths lead. The young woman has been identified as Giovanni’s wife Costanza, thought to have died in childbirth. The intimacy & tenderness of the couple, their joined hands reflected in mirror, her hopeful spring green contrasting with his sombre garb; a snuffed candle, all suggest a posthumous tribute. 3/4

The signature & date are above the convex mirror ‘Johannes de Eyck fuit hic 1434’ - Jan Van Eyck was here 1434. This work passed into Habsburg Collections (Margaret of Austria, Philip I of Spain) before enteringThe National Gallery London, host of Exhibition of Van Eyck from November 2026. 4/4

The couple’s costly fur-trimmed & lined clothes: his purple silk velvet tabard trimmed with sable; her spring green houppelande lined with miniver, suggest name of Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini, Lucca silk merchant living in Bruges, supplier to Philip the Good of Burgundy, patron of Van Eyck. 2/4

Eleonora di Toledo was the Consort of Cosimo I de’ Medici. Wealthy & aristocratic, with costly pearls, pendant jewel, formal brocaded gown reflecting her upbringing at Spanish Court: with white satin embossed with black velvet scrolls; and gold thread pomegranate motifs symbolising fertility. 2/3

The wealth, power & dynastic ambitions of the Medici are thus subtly reinforced; while the pyramidal composition, Eleonora’s serene pose, encircling arm around her son, and lighter blue ‘halo’ around her head are inspired by traditional representations of Madonna & Child 3/3
