Those wanting a demonstration of the wine vending machine can wait - I'm in the Mosel at harvest time and we're about to play Federweiser roulette. This is wine that's just started to ferment and can be anything from fizzy grape juice to 12% abv. Wish me luck!

This isn't the part of Germany you get in the tourist brochures. It's an area that's had to find a way to move beyond the coal and steel that it was built on. It's not entirely there yet. But it's got a spark of its own...

Actually, forget the 'almost'. This is a model railway in the rarely seen 1:1 scale. I could have spent hours up here.

It's so big inside, in fact, that a few years ago the spare envelope and gondola of Breitling Orbiter 3 - the first crewed balloon to circumnavigate the world nonstop - was on display there. That had room to spare as well.

The fun hasn't stopped though, because from here you can step outside for some of the best views in the Ruhrgebiet. This is still the powerhouse of German industry, but a surprising amount of nature now sits between the chimneys and factories.

Above the pressure cap, fixed permanently 4m above the base, a semi-conical auditorium has been installed, giving another space for exhibiting photos. I, er, forgot to photo this bit.

Inside the auditorium is the star installation though. A "tree" made of lighting and projection onto a circular screen above. Below it people on beanbags laze, watching the changing colours. Those of you who saw the Weather Project at the Tate will recognise the vibe.

Yup, it's time to visit Oberhausen's Gasometer - 117m of industrial engineering, built to store the gas from coking and ironmaking and after decommissioning in 1988 converted to one of Europe's most unusual exhibition spaces.

Mythos Wald follows the well-established model for a Gasometer blockbuster. The ground floor, underneath the massive 1200 ton cap that kept the gas under pressure, hosts photographs for the current exhibition.

It is, today, not the 13th anniversary of the publication of Steven Morrissey’s autobiography (it had been out for ten days) but something much better: the 13th anniversary of the Sunday Times publishing A. A. Gill’s merciless mauling of it—a review which went on to win Hatchet Job of the Year

Prince Maurice's grave is interesting, because it was a good example of the conflicting thoughts families had. Princess Beatrice refused repatriation of the body. She felt he belonged with his men. But she fought for years for the right to spend her own money on a custom headstone. This was blocked

Remembering Prince Maurice of Battenberg, the youngest grandchild of Queen Victoria, who was killed in action on this day in 1914, aged just 23. In December 1918, his cousin, King George V, visited his grave to pay his respects. 📍 Ypres Town Cemetery 🇧🇪

Full disclosure for those asking about my attitude towards this sort of thing - I've been out in worse, in smaller:

Just going through all my videos and stuff from this week, and honestly, this level of not giving a fuck about accidentally finding yourself in a force 9 gale with absolute novices is what I aspire to...

Meanwhile quite how they ended up in that particular pickle is... not one of the USN's most celebrated stories

#OTD in 1944, the outgunned ships of Taffy 3 fought a powerful Japanese fleet off Samar. Their extraordinary courage became one of the U.S. Navy's most celebrated stories. Read more in Proceedings: https://www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/2024/october/why-i-celebrate-battle-leyte-gulf

Take nothing away from Taffy 3 though. Facing up to a battlefleet whose biggest ship outdisplaces you *on its own* and handing out sufficient kicking that they turn tail and run is Royal Navy levels of silliness, and I mean that in the most admiring way.

"This could have been an email." Aragorn whispers. "He ALWAYS pulls this shit in 'Any Other Business" Boromir replies, quietly. "It's why Faramir marked himself as busy when the invite went out."

The Shire-Reckoning@shire-reckoning.bsky.social

Elrond tells the long story of the One Ring, from its forging in the Mountain of Fire, to its betrayal of Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Frodo is startled to learn that Elrond himself marched with Gil-Galad in the Last Alliance against Sauron, more than three thousand years ago.

I don’t know if I’ve encountered that one but they do make a godforsaken sausage down here that has cheese in it. I imagine it’s much the same mouthfeel.
