The suggestion that Trump will lose supporters because he is no longer lucid or coherent imples that they previously supported him because of his hardnosed pragmatism and/or ironclad grip on reality. I do not believe either of these things are true.

Republicans vote for Trump because they think the Democrats are worse. They will always think the Democrats are worse. And it doesn’t much matter what Democrats do or say because most people only hear what they want to hear.

Social media makes it easier than ever to enclose ourselves in hermetic bubbles with like-minded political opinions. If the voices you hear are grounded in reality, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If they’re driven by fantasy, bigotry, or groundless panic, then it is.
