The sad thing is that, while many of us think it's disgraceful that the VP can't even pronounce the names of countries in an absolutely critical part of the world, there are also many people who think, "Hey, that's pretty cool!"

Patrick Chovanec@prchovanec.bsky.social

“I can relate to you. I’m clueless too.”

Also--even if the information would have qualified to toll the statute of limitations, the 10 year period would have expired on October 4 of this year, not October 5.

emptywheel@emptywheel.bsky.social

The information came 2 days after Aakash Singh got a promotion. Comey was ALREADY arguing that Trump was getting these bullshit cases by promoting people. news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/...

Notably, other than not certifying the election, the complaint doesn't spell out a remedy which would result in a certifiable election. It only says that an "investigation" needs to then be made. But the balloting is anonymous so there's no way to either investigate or determine a different result.

Chris Geidner@chrisgeidner.bsky.social

Yeah, this man should not be allowed to practice law, and any failure to take away his ability to practice law after all of this would be a part of the end of the rule of law in America.

The lawsuit is frivolous. Even if the DOJ had the right to interfere, there's no way they could determine that any of the votes for the "lesser" Sullivan were mistaken, and no legal basis for justify the reversal of "mistaken" votes. Votes are anonymous.

Eric Columbus@ericcolumbus.bsky.social

Here’s the relevant language in the DOJ lawsuit. It asks for the election not to be certified if Peltola’s margin of victory is smaller than the number of votes cast for the third-party Sullivan. (I expect this to be laughed out of court.) storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Read the article. Audi says its investing in a plant in Georgia that, according to Trump, will produce 200k vehicles/year. The chairman appears because of this announcement. There's nothing offensive about this & it's no reason to shun the company. Trump often grossly exaggerates the scope 1/2

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

Assholes Usually Drive It

of these deals, but 200k doesn't seem crazy. Audi's US sales have been declining, but in 2024 it was nearly 200k. A domestic-made car will presumably be cheaper than imported ones, so that would likely boost sales here.

The eternal question with Trump: When is he lying and when is he delusional? Did his staff tell him that Denmark gave us Greenland & that the deal says this, just sign here, sir? Or does he know what the deal says but just thinks the rubes won't know any better?

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

“Denmark gave us Greenland”?

Sarah Palin didn't understand it either. Says something about the intellectual ability of both.

Rick Hasen@rickhasen.bsky.social

Donald Trump does not understand that ranked choice voting is much more likely to save Senator Dan Sullivan than to hurt him.

Also--the mother wouldn't have any first-hand knowledge as to whether abuse took place or not; she would only have her husband's denials. So there's no reason to take her word for it that her 12-year old daughter was lying.

Clara Jeffery@clarajeffery.bsky.social

They somehow tracked Acton’s birth mom down, found her living in a car with her cats, in a church parking lot, and took her to a video shoot to make vague accusations about her daughter, who she hadn’t seen in 40+ years, being a liar. Borders on elder abuse.

I see a lot of sniping on this site at the NYT because commenters think that the headlines to political stories aren't aggressive enough. But reporting like this reminds us that the NYT remains an essential reporter on the the disgraceful actions of Trump and his Administration.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

Incredible if predictable betrayal of public trust: you have industry lobbyists become appointees, exploit unitary executive theory to undermine environmental laws and ride roughshod over staff.

"Fair game" about a child sex abuse victim--that's not going to sit weil.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "What's happened is the press has ganged up on a woman making a horrible statement about her daughter, and I don't why she should be shielded. She said she was a dirty liar ... I say she's fair game."

One more attempted bribery. If there's not an article of impeachment based on these bribes, then I would hope that there's a criminal charge brought by the next Administration's DOJ that would avoid the SC immunity decision.

darth™️@darthbluesky.bsky.social

hmmmm this doesn’t sound right

I can't (or don't want to) picture Trump actually in a swimming pool. This sounds like just another project/hobby to keep him from dwelling on the fact that he's historically unpopular and doesn't know how to solve the problems he's created.

Brian Phillips@brianphillips.lol

In the bedrock of my soul I know he started out thinking the press pool was a literal pool and has been seething with disappointment since he discovered the mistake

Mamdani and El-Sayed are smart, well-educated, culturally aware people. Trump on the other hand is stupid & profoundly ignoran. It's possible that he didn't understand the significance of the term the 1st time he used it. But has no one since explained it to him? I refuse to believe that.

Joel S.@joelhs.bsky.social

If Zohran Mamdani or Abdul El-Sayed had used the word “Shylock” as an insult, the ADL would be attacking them by name relentlessly. But Donald Trump used it, so we get a generic condemnation of the word without any specific reference to who actually used it, and with no assumption of intent.

"compared to what they could be doing". Sure, that's the standard by which we should be judging Russia's assistance to Iran. And Hitler wasn't such a bad guy; after all, he could have done much worse.

🗽LOLGOP🗽@lolgop.bsky.social

“Donald Trump lost the war in Iran. As a narcissist, he needs scapegoats to blame for his own historic failure, and Russia’s dictator has scripted convenient scapegoats for him: Ukraine for attacking Russia’s diesel refineries, Europe, for failing to join Trump’s rudderless attack.”

Even if Vivek wasn't aware of Acton's history of abuse, he & his team should have been extremely skeptical of using an estranged parent in ads to attack Acton--there's a high probability of unreliability inherent in that situation.

MeidasTouch@meidastouch.com

🚨 VILE: Vivek Ramaswamy’s new attack ad against Amy Acton features her estranged mother, who stayed married to the man who sexually abused her daughter at age 12, even after his arrest. Now even conservatives are calling the ad disgusting. The horrifying story behind Vivek’s attack:

Who is she kidding? It was obvious at the time that Kavanaugh, like the other Trump/Republicans nominees, was vetted & recommended by the Federalist Society & selected precisely because he would overturn Roe.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Susan Collins on Kavanaugh: "I'm very disappointed in his his vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. There was no way for me to anticipate that."

All of these clips from his rally--he's obviously mentally ill, and still Republicans in Congress won't say or do anything.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump on Iran: "We're knocking the shit out of them ... we could leave right now"

But for Vance, this may simply be about getting better known in NC in advance of the 2028 Republican Presidential primary.

Jen Rubin@jenrubin.bsky.social

LOL. They send him to a lost Senate race where they pulled out money weeks ago. A real powerhouse that Vance is...

Where are the resignations from the Administration over Trump's Exec Order about Russia? Why isn't Rubio, formerly a strong supporter of Ukraine, resigning? Is anyone in this Administration, at long last, going to take a public stand for integrity and principle? Now would be the moment for this.

The WH will defend this and similar statements as jokes. Doubtful. But even if, they're not funny, insulting, childish and suggest a possible mental problem and certainly a refusal--and maybe inability--to address real world problems.

Dave Itzkoff@ditzkoff.bsky.social

2 Questions: (1) Was Gaiser's communication to Trump protected legal advice or a non-legal (and therefore ot protected by privilege) reporting of the facts of the election? (2) Would he be as reluctant to answer if he had told Trump that the election was stolen?

Quinta Jurecic@qjurecic.bsky.social

Well, this is a new one

Less important but more intriguing--Habba complained that her new husband's payment was diverted, but my guess is that he never made the payment. Does that mean that the honeymoon is over?

Jen Rubin@jenrubin.bsky.social

holy moly... dead to rights @democrats-judiciary.house.gov

This requires some context. Does a plaintiff still need to show discriminatory intent as well as disparate impact? Does it have to show both in order to prevail? I assume that disparate impact alone isn't sufficient, nor that it is evidence of intent, but this post requires some fleshing out.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

ah we are going to get some nice reverse disparate impact where having too many black people is evidence of anti-white discrimination

A Presidential pardon can't protect him from disbarment.

emptywheel@emptywheel.bsky.social

And virtually everything Stan Woodward has signed (was actually thinking of reviewing this to check) are EXTREMELY abusive, as if he's certain he'll be pardoned under the Trump v. US precedent.

It's unconscionable. Innocent people died as a result of this action. Hard to imagine that this didn't come from Trump himsel or at least was approved by him. And, of course, he lied and tried to blame it on Musk.

Shipwreck@shipwreck75.bsky.social

The order to limit a satellite system used by Ukraine for battlefield communications and drone operations came from inside the White House, according to two US officials and a Western official briefed on the matter.

Are we starting to see fractures in Trumpworld? Habba feuding with Grenell over a missing contribution to the Kennedy Center, Trump & Musk blaming each other over Starlink. Things fall apart...

MeidasTouch@meidastouch.com

And now Trump officials are blaming Musk...

I realize that this is South Carolina & a Democratic candidate has to take moderate positions, but a balanced budget law is a terrible idea & it's disappointing that Andrews is pushing it.

CALL TO ACTIVISM@calltoactivism.bsky.social

Hold on. You can't make this up. Darline Graham warns that Annie Andrews, who NEVER elected to anything, will drive up the debt... while PRAISING Trump, who added $12 TRILLION to it, the most in American history, for "fraud, waste, and abuse." Annie's response was priceless.

Trump's post about this said the diesel oil was being sold to the US and the global marketplace. So we don't know how much of this, if any, is coming here

darth™️@darthbluesky.bsky.social

the rare case of trump being one hundred percent honest with you

To be judged by three Trump political appointees Sounds like a kangaroo court.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

Today, President Donald Trump announced the creation of a new committee to investigate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud, even after those claims were shown to be incorrect.

He's starting to get up there in "everyone must wear their underwear on the outsid" territory.

Brad Takei@bradtakei.bsky.social

Nothing voters care more about than AI terminology. Trump is truly dialed in.

One problem with this is that there's no doubt a not insignificant part of the public who will find a public execution to be great entertainment. Videos will go viral, the MAGA crowd will push for more of these, and eventually, they will turn into a TV reality show.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

right. this isn’t a somber public execution to show people what it means for the state to murder someone. this is a celebration of violence for its own sake. the fact that the nidal hasan is helpless and infirm is no doubt part of the appeal. bsky.app/profile/spir...

Aside from the gross corruption of this, what really strikes me is that she had run up $100k of unpaid credit card charges to American Express. And she was about to take a job that paid just under $200k/year.

Bill Kristol@billkristolbulwark.bsky.social

“‘Eric, I really wish you would stop papering all these things,’ Guilfoyle responded. ‘It’s really dangerous and not helpful to you or me while you could simply just call me on signal.’ …A U.S. ambassador lecturing her briber on bribing best practices.” www.thebulwark.com/p/our-big-fa...

But calling for an investigation is committing himself to a position. His problem is he thinks there's a good chance that Trump will instead call it fake news & there won't be any investigation. Then Vance will be caught out in contradiction with Trump once again.

Patrick Chovanec@prchovanec.bsky.social

It’s amazing how they can’t bring themselves to say something serious but noncommittal like, “I’ve seen these reports and it’s concerning. We will investigate it and find out the truth.”

Voters elect officials to establish boards of education to hire professional education administrators & qualified teachers. Parents don't know what to teach or how to teach .

Ron Filipkowski@ronfilipkowski.bsky.social

Being uneducated and ignorant never kept Tommy Tuberville from getting elected in Alabama. Although he did earn a Physical Education degree at Southern Arkansas University.

"Litle things": This is a mark of desperation, from party leaders who know they can't defend the abysmal record of this Administration. What's their plan to reduce prices, to end the Iran war? They never talk about that because they have no plans, no policies.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

“This is not the time to sort of gripe about all the little things,” said Vice President JD Vance on Thursday about the coming mid-term election season, despite the fact that a recent AP-NORC Center poll from late September found 73% of Americans think the country is on the wrong track.

Hillary Clinton did not hold government office while Trump was President, so in fact he couldn't have tried to impeach her.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump on getting impeached: "I'm getting good at it ... I could've done that with Hillary Clinton, as you know, I had the chance to do it if I wanted, and I said that would be inappropriate"

Guessing that people are staying in their jobs because they're afraid of giving up employer health insurance.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling: "We're seeing people staying in their jobs longer now ... we're seeing people very happy where they are in their jobs because employers are doing better."

The argument is misplaced. Educated, urban affluent voters generally don't need institutional day care; they have nannies. But lots of young voters--both urban & non-urban--are two income families out of necessity, and free day care would be important.

This post is unavailable.

That strikes me as desparate--does Ellison need an investor that badly? Musk as a significant equity owner--and he'll want a seat on the board--will alienate a lot of creatives in film and TV.

Justin Baragona@justinbaragona.bsky.social

Welp. According to Semafor, David Ellison has discussed bringing Elon Musk on as an investor in Paramount's merger with Warner Bros., which could mean Musk could have a stake in CBS News and CNN. www.semafor.com/article/09/2...

Worth noting that he pullout out of the agreement against the advice of Secretaries of State and Defense and his National Security Advisor.

Acyn@acyn.bsky.social

FOX: We’re active with Iran—how do you get out? El-Sayed: You don’t get in in the first place. We had an agreement that had contained nuclear weapons. We did not need to do this, so the first time the dunce got elected he pulled back on the agreement.

The Administration which constantly lies calls media which tell the truth "far-left propaganda".

Joe Walsh@walshfreedom.bsky.social

I can’t wait to see Hannity & all the others on the right lose their shit when the next Democratic president bans Fox News, Newsmax, etc from the White House and says, “If you are going to engage in what’s effectively far-right propaganda, why would a Democratic White House give you special access?”

This is how many Republicans criticize Trump. They are afraid to criticize him directly, so they blame his advisers. But ultimately, Trump is responsible.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

GOP Rep. Salazar, who criticizes Trump's immigration policies in an ad: "I think that some of his advisers are compromising his legacy"

But Trump has a tendency to overstate the terms of the deals he supposedly makes. We should be skeptical of his description and, perhaps, wait to see the agreement or get input from Denmark.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

Trump boasts of giving the US "permanent control over security" in Greeland. But the US military already enjoys sweeping access to the territory under a treaty that dates to the 1950s. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
