PNW residing collective of rabbits in a trenchcoat pretending to be a person with a job and rent and the rest of that crap. Clearly the live action role playing has gone too far. Fond of tea, beer, and the destruction of capitalism.

The problem with trying to talk about possible productive uses for AI is that you’re trying to advocate for the pleasant invigoration that a cup of coffee provides next to some tech bro who is snorting his third 8-ball of the morning and screaming incoherently about productivity maxing

One upside to weird xian sect bullshit in the 21st century is that some hapless pheasant in Flanders doesn’t have to put up with a bunch of assholes in metal haberdashery running rampant through their turnips to resolve who god loves more.

I want to see every fucker involved in those rule changes forced to explain to every ancestor that died of a disgusting and now curable or preventable disease why they're more worried about The Gays than letting the science hippies continue their work uninterrupted.

How old do you have to be until it’s socially acceptable to tell the woman sitting behind you on public transport that her boyfriend is a complete dickbag and she deserves better as a human being.

If local sex equipment shops don't start printing "you could do better, start afresh with 20% off your newest buzzy buddy" coupons for people to hand out to those who need a little push in the right direction then capitalism really has zero redeeming qualities.

While I appreciate apple puts a limit on high volume levels in headphones I need an override for “I am in an enclosed space with an impatient toddler and need to listen to Motorhead at very high volumes”. Please and thank you and why is this not a thing already.

Taking a flight for the first time in nearly a decade. Rate of masking is less than 1% but I’m doing so as my 79 year old mother gets all the exposure to horrible diseases she could hope for from the grandkids and I would prefer to not bring something new to the inter family biome.

So I think AI could work for those who can go through the process of going from an idea, sketching it out, building up the components, and then fighting with your tools until they spit out what you want. Which from what I've seen if very, very few people.

And that's not surprising, how many people get taught how to plan and execute a creative project. Especially when it's for yourself, not a client, just what you want.

I think the barrier for using generative AI for creative work is that when you turn the crank, it spits out a refined result. And that's where most people are going to stop. It's a pretty picture, what more do you want? Which is why everything looks like mall art. Looks nice but whatever.

I've never been a good photographer because I don't know how to plan. I can do documentary style work well enough but not something that requires a vision, iterating through plans, and then making something happen so you get an acceptable fraction of your original idea.

I attempted to make an appointment with a nutritionist for a fairly specific set of questions. It seems they flagged me as someone who identifies as a heterosexual male of a certain age which means they are now requiring me to take a class first.

I can't argue that statistically, they're correct in insisting that I learn what a grocery store looks like and how to identify common vegetables that are not a potato. As a 50 year old straight male who has done all the cooking and shopping for the past 14 years I am Spiders Georg.

It occurs to me that the one class they're not teaching is, "Dealing drugs, producing online pornography, defrauding your neighbors. How to Afford the Mediterranean Diet". You want me to eat fresh fish 3 times a week, fresh vegetables everyday, and olive oil? With what trust fund?

The options were: 1) So you got divorced. Learn how to obtain food from somewhere other than the bodega. 2) You now have food, here's how to cook. 3) You have a chronic condition that requires you to change your diet, here's how not to die horribly costing us $$$ on the way down.

www.wired.com/story/cobol-... I was wondering why I got an advertisement for learning Cobol... I learned to program on Fortran '77 so I understand some of the... ah... quirks of older languages which had to work under very limited resources and with peculiarities of the hardware.

wired.comCOBOL Is the Asbestos of Programming LanguagesThe most widely adopted computer language in history, COBOL is now causing a host of problems. It's also dangerously difficult to remove.

In a way working with antiquated programming languages teaches you an important lesson in the study of history. People weren't stupid, they did the best with what they had and what they knew. And sometimes their best was not actually their best, they kinda phoned it in because of reasons.

But we have to live with the past and what it left for the living. In some cases, its fine art, in others, its a pile of shit delivered hot and fresh to your desk on Monday morning when you discover you're now the last person alive at your organization who has any hope of understanding the code.

That was, after all, the whole "move fast and break things" ethos. It's not really engineering.

The biggest change in software development is not AI code, but a permission structure for disregarding quality in the pursuit of velocity

I keep reading articles claiming that “the cost of code is approaching zero” due to AI code generators. Which as someone who works on a 15 year old app sounds like bullshit. You can spit out code quickly but does it work, will it continue to work and most importantly, can you change it later?

As I spent all of last night shivering in my bed with Adam Ant running on repeat through my head due to a robust immune response from my second shingles vaccination I’m wondering how much of vaccine hesitation is not understanding that feeling like shit for 20-30 hours is just part of the process

Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. Been doing some updates to my decade old Fuji X-T2 while I wait for the X-T6 to come out (maybe later this year, maybe I can afford it then, maybe not).

Since I've been getting really into my anamorphic lenses I've added a cheap video monitor (so I can see what the unsquished frame looks like) and camera cage which worked out quite well. What worked out less well was the variable ND filter. I now have fixed ND filters for next time.

And by using GenAI we don't mean spreading a bit of butter on your toast in the morning, we mean unwrapping an entire pound of butter, slapping that on the bread and unhinging your jaw. Three times a day.

The party line has gone from "women have to start using genAI or they'll be left behind" to "everyone has to start using genAI or they'll be left behind" to "everyone has to start using genAI or genAI will be left behind."

As my sleep patterns have been haphazard at best lately I did spend half the day thinking that I must have hallucinated reading news headlines for the Venezuela strikes as I was half awake at 5:00 in the morning. It’s been very disappointing to discover that it was not a hallucination.

One of the more annoying aspects of getting treated for ADHD is that you constantly need to remind yourself that as you’re not taking your medication on the weekends, it’s normal to feel like a complete unfocused shit show.

I probably shouldn't say this out loud, but given the administration's tendencies and their "wartime" messaging I wouldn't be surprised if they tried starting to draft people into ICE. Yes, that's not how the draft is supposed to work but when did that stop anyone?

This is obviously distressing but also who the fuck are they going to hire?? They’re already recruiting guys who weren’t qualified enough to be mall cops. Where are these 14k people coming from?

This year sucked shit. My now late wife decided to end her struggle with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis with the help of the Final Exit Network. In short, she killed herself. I also work in research administration for a large university and you know what they've done to the sciences.

My wife's exit was also a high point as we have time to focus on each other and find closure for our long relationship and even longer friendship. She passed peacefully knowing she was loved and that she was supported in her decision.

Which has made the impact on my day job that much more infuriating. MS is incurable and treatment options are limited for her form of MS. Lower corporate taxes isn't going to cure it, only research.
