And the historical analog here is obvious. Hooverism killed the Rs for 20 years. People didn't back the Ds reflexively for decades out of gratitude for the new deal. They did it bc Hooverism taught tens of millions forever that you just can't trust an R.

I know we're all cynical af, but people can learn. Its kind of our species whole deal.

"I was a dumbass for X, Y, Z reasons. Material reality made me see the error of my ways" is actually incredibly uplifting stuff, especially from a 25 year old with a blue collar job and a HS diploma. He was a teenager during Trump 1

I get why that guy specifically wants a future where media orgs aren't called to congress to explain their political moderation. I just don't see how he sees a future where his place exists if this competition stays as asymmetric as it has been.

God could you imagine if Trump even escalated as far as to sue media orgs that covered him negatively?

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

People demanding Zuck be hauled before Congress to explain why No Kings insta was suspended... how would you feel if MAGA GOP hauled MSNow execs to explain why they covered Trump the way they do? Both are editorial choices protected by the First Amendment. If this annoys you...

In Beijing, in honor of the lady of the hour Arrived day 1 for the owner to say "I decided not to do that anymore. You can go."

I mean, why wouldn't he? The Russian outer districts are run as kelptocratic clients. When Putin kicks it they'll look for someone that can deliver cashflow, and it will be years before Moscow gets a successor sorted out that could do that.

Tangential but this reminds me, whatever happened to all those dudes that spent years (so many years!) loudly telling everyone'it's not fascism it's just'... ain't heard from them in a bit

Adam Gurri@adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com

This is precisely why the fascists are going to keep eating your lunch

To me this is not jumping on a grenade, more like triggering a claymore apm the sender never knew was there. Click clack dipshit!

the bravest thing a manager can do for their team is say "i will respond to that email". not even for every email. but for maybe 1 out of every 100 emails it's the modern equivalent of jumping on a grenade and why someone should get to be in a leadership role

For anyone that's never traveled to Asia, going to the nearest food court attached to an Asian supermarket chain at 6 on a Friday is a fair proxy. By 615 you will have decided you have got to travel.

If you ever find yourself in H-Town, I am begging you to visit Hong Kong City Mall on Bellaire. It is anchored with a massive grocery store, but there's an indoor corridor with food shops (including one of the best Pho spots ever) and also a stores that sell laserdiscs(!!) of imported SE Asian films

Last time Dems ran a handsome, charming candidate for pres was Obama. Time before was Bill Clinton. Time before was FDR. Pretty good track record. Gotta be a political theory in there somewhere.

The Gworls on socials are starting to say Ossoff is fine for a white boy. You laugh but this is a strong indicator. He is ginning up the juice. (Do you see what I did there??)

Every football fan hates Jay Cutler, but he was riiigggghttt

i'm torn: Landon Donovan was truly very good in his day and put in a workman's effort for the team. on the other hand I think the general "don't rest, who cares about your ankle, break your body for the team" ethos is just silly American sports culture that long deserved the death it is now dying

Lee's conception of the CSA was also tied to VA rather than the broader political entity. Accepting a war of attrition earlier might succeed but almost guarantees being pushed out of VA militarily to regain it in the peace with an exhausted union.

Its even dumber bc along with this truth is that US me mostly wont do those jobs. Throughout the 2010s US manufacturing was flailing to fill jobs at good entry and progressive wages on offer. It's all the most dumbass pantomime, just like coal.

Dmitry Grozoubinski@explaintrade.com

Modern factories do not lucratively employ half the men in the town straight out of high school to work an assembly line on union contracts. That was a weird blip in the 1950's when automation hadn't taken off yet and the US was the only country in the world whose factories weren't blown to shit.

Thing is, a million soldiers saying 'we slaughtered our aristocrats and monarchs and it made us invincible' speaks louder to the people of europe than the voice of any ruler.

The thing about Napoleon is that wherever his armies went they were eventually so hated the people invented nationalism.

Choosing an idiot as head of state and a yes man as head of the Army? Doesn't ring a bell.

i’m just going to apologize in advance but i can’t resist: the point of the maginot line was to make germany invade through belgium again! the maginot line did what it was supposed to, the french just fucked up the rest of it

Need Cruz to show up at the next SA game so both teams are cursed

So the Knicks win 13 playoff games in a row, a historic run! Then Donald Trump shows up to their first NBA finals home game this century, falls asleep, and they promptly lose lmao.

Theyre calling him the world's most honest rancher

“There are two sides of me,” Brian McClain scrawled on a piece of paper to his wife. One that loves you, he wrote. “The other that stole from people.” How a Kentucky rancher built a “house of cards” beef operation that burned through $170 million: 🔗 on.wsj.com/440KlGZ

Greatful for this courageous story, because it reminded me to file a credit card dispute on my last Wired subscription charge. I forgot for 2 months!

For the @wired.com Big Interview this week, I interviewed California gubernatorial hopeful and billionaire Tom Steyer. It was a tough hang for many reasons, but particularly because he didn't know who he was talking to.

Also, if you can impeach Trump, then you don't need to in order to stop him. If you do impeach Trump, you give the Rs (and the MSM) a free re-set into the elections without him reminding the voters of... you know... himself.

Folks, we are really really really not going to start bombing Iran again.

NoHoldsBarred@aussiesteve64.bsky.social

A CSIS report indicates the US used 45-50% of its Patriot air defence missile, over 50% of its THAAD interceptor stocks & nearly 30% of Tomahawk missile & over 20% of JASSM air to surface missile stocks during its 7-week war in Iran. Rebuilding these stockpiles will take 3 to 5 years.

But do episcopalians still get to hate Luther with a great fire? This is an important question for my wife

donoteat@donoteat.bsky.social

do you want "Catholicism but american" we invented that, it's called Episcopalianism and it's even more woke. all the priests are lesbians. good luck

All the uncertainty over US choices over the next few weeks can be boiled away by focusing on missile inventories. It's one thing to start this war knowing it will gut them, it's another to restart it when they're already gutted.
