dlvr.itAI, Vol. 7, Pages 442: XAI for Financial Sustainability Assessment and Prediction in Higher Education InstitutionsFinancial sustainability is a growing concern for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Many institutions face structural financial pressures due to reduced public funding, volatile enrolment, and rising costs. Although institutions collect increasing amounts of financial data, sustainability assessments often rely on backward-looking accounting ratios and provide limited insight into future patterns. Rather than proposing a new machine-learning algorithm, this study integrates and empirically evaluates established, complementary analytical techniques within one framework: financial Key Performance Indicator (KPI) engineering, a Financial Sustainability Index (FSI), machine-learning prediction, relative sustainability classification, institutional clustering, anomaly detection, and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). Using the public Higher Education Statistics Agency finance collection, we constructed a longitudinal dataset containing 2207 provider-year observations and examined income diversification, funding dependency, research activity, growth, and capital investment. Supervised prediction was evaluated on 1880 longitudinal records using leakage-safe expanding-window temporal validation. Across 1387 out-of-time observations, the persistence baseline achieved the strongest performance, with an R2 of 0.868, an MAE of 1.332, and an RMSE of 2.462. The Random Forest model remained strongly predictive, achieving an R2 of 0.852, an MAE of 1.587, and an RMSE of 2.612, while demonstrating stable performance across 30 random seeds. Temporal relative-sustainability classification achieved a mean accuracy of 0.842 and a macro-F1 score of 0.835. Unsupervised analysis identified three institutional profiles, while Isolation Forest flagged 111 financially atypical provider-year observations. Once current-year FSI was excluded, XAI analysis identified tuition dependency, income diversification, unrestricted reserves, and premises costs as the indicators on which predictions relied most. Because the FSI is internally constructed and the classification categories are sample-relative, the framework is presented as a proof-of-concept approach for sustainability screening and benchmarking rather than a validated predictor of financial distress.

Signal or noise? > RISION Torix, A $169 Thermal Camera That Finds Water Leaks And Hot Wires in Seconds >> Comment below! #IoT #healthtech #mhealth #AI #industry40

dlvr.itRISION Torix, A $169 Thermal Camera That Finds Water Leaks And Hot Wires in SecondsRISION Torix After releasing its Magic series, two USB-C thermal camera modules for smartphones, RISION is launching its first standalone handheld model, the Torix. The Magic ($119 at launch) is aimed at homeowners and the Magic Pro ($229) adds analysis tools for inspectors, but both need to be clipped onto a phone. As of today, the Magic ranks #4 in Amazon’s best sellers for thermal imagers, and it is the top-selling smartphone model on that list. I saw the RISION Magic series at IFA 2026. The RISION Magic smartphone module is so sensitive it can detect residual heat from a palm resting on a wooden surface, even several seconds after the hand is removed. The Torix embeds its own display and battery, so there is no need to rely on a smartphone to find a hot breaker, a cold draft, a water leak, or an overloaded wire. Pre-orders open today on RISION’s website, with an early-bird price of $169 down from the regular $219. RISION developed it for HVAC technicians, building inspectors, mechanics, and serious DIYers who want a pocketable and affordable tool that delivers the information they need fast, with one hand free. According to the company, the camera starts instantly, displays the thermal image on a 2.8-inch screen, and runs for more than 10 hours on a single charge. A full recharge takes about an hour. It is rated IP54 against dust and splashes and is built to survive a 2-meter drop. The sensor is 160 x 120, behind a 2.6 mm lens. RISION claims 320 x 240 output through its QuadIR super resolution processing. That image is upscaled from the native sensor, so how much real detail it adds will depend on how well the processing is done. Thermal sensitivity is listed at 40 mK or better, with a 25 Hz refresh rate, a measurement range of -20°C to 550°C (-4°F to 1,022°F), and accuracy of ±2°C or 2%. One key feature is the alarm. You set high and low temperature limits, and when a reading crosses either one, the Torix shows a red alert and automatically saves a full radiometric image. Interval capture can take a shot as often as every 10 seconds, helping track issues that show up randomly. Photos and MP4 video are stored on an SD card and can be transferred to a computer over USB-C. RISION’s free Smart software for Windows adds measurement tools and report generation. At $169, the Torix lands right next to Topdon’s TC004 Mini, which is $158.99 on sale with a 128 x 128 native sensor and a 25 Hz refresh rate. The Torix has a bit more native detail and records video, which the Mini can’t do. FLIR’s C5 has the same 160 x 120 resolution but runs at a much lower 8.7 Hz refresh rate and costs $699, though it adds a visible-light camera and Wi-Fi. For a real step up in sharpness, Topdon’s TC004 has a native 256 x 192 sensor for $299. At the early-bird price, the Torix offers the best bang for the buck among entry-level standalone thermal cameras. Open sales begin November 16 on RISION’s site and on Amazon. We have not tested one yet, so the battery and durability numbers are RISION’s claims for now.
