Ossoff for president

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Ossoff: "Tech titans dig bunkers while warning us the AI they're creating risks human extinction. Meanwhile, our Congress debates youth sports and the president builds a ballroom ... I refuse to leave my girls a world as dark and dangerous and cruel as this one threatens to become"

Shocking to hear the news about the suspected attack on MP Helen Haines. If this was politically motivated, it’s a sign that Australian politics has reached a new low. It’s time to turn the temperature down - there’s too much hatred, abuse, division and disinformation. It’s radicalising people.

The people who built AI with seemingly little care for the havoc it could cause and no guardrails to protect public should be held accountable for every problem AI is now causing. They want to make billions but don’t want to accept responsibility for their technology. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09...

I've written about the Labor paradox: some voters think Labor is too progressive and others say Labor is not progressive enough. Labor must build a broad political consensus and those who want change but don't want change to impact them are not helping! independentaustralia.net/politics/pol...

independentaustralia.netThe Labor paradox: Too progressive, not progressive enoughLabor governments face criticism from both sides, but progress requires compromise, consensus and accepting that not every change will suit everyone.

It’s always been a lie that Pauline Hanson represents the interests of ordinary Australians. That lie is exposed in her despicable attacks on Albanese’s mother for living in public housing. Hanson is a cruel and manipulative person. I don’t understand why her supporters can’t see this.

I find it abhorrent that AFL clubs are circling trying to pick up players from Sydney who have been banned because of their awful behaviour. What message does this send? Clubs don’t care how players behave as long as they’re good footy players? Oh that’s right - that’s how Sydney got into this mess!

It is clear that the Sydney Swans and the AFL are in “damage control” over the hotel bender and aren’t being transparent about exactly what they know and what happened. A full INDEPENDENT investigation is needed into the events of that night and also how common such benders are amongst all clubs.

If Swans and AFL really want to live up to their promise to “do better” it needs to start with transparency and acknowledgement this was not a few bad apples behaving badly, but was normalised cultural behaviour that the club has been condoning until it became public through police investigation.

A standing ovation by Swans supporters at the end of the game yesterday just shows the whole club doesn’t get it. The events of last Sunday didn’t happen to the club. They are not the victims. The club produced this behaviour through its culture and needs to self reflect on that. Whole AFL does too.

Much of the reporting about the game is playing into the idea that the club are the victims, and that they deserve sympathy. This is despite many unanswered questions about who exactly was in the room, and why the room was forensically cleaned before police arrive. Independent investigation needed.

I would love to see Sydney Swans take ownership for the cultural problems that led to the abhorrent behaviour of at least 5 players on Sunday night. Rather than say “this is not the culture of our club”, how about admitting “we need to fix the culture of our club”. Change comes from self reflection!

If you're more concerned about whether high profile Black professor Jason Arday told lies about his achievements than you are about the fact that President Trump lies almost every time he opens his mouth (including about his achievements), then you need to take a good long hard look at yourself.

It is disappointing to see The Guardian defending its investigation into Arday rather than reflecting on whether there was really anything to be gained by them joining clearly racist attacks on Arday's reputation, attacks which culminated in him killing himself. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

theguardian.comThe Guardian view on Jason Arday: a tragedy that demands reflection | EditorialEditorial: Legitimate scrutiny became entangled with a racial argument about merit and diversity. His death raises questions about how society treats black success and failure

Less concerned with ramifications of allegations against five Sydney Swans players on their finals campaign and more concerned with the consequences for the woman/women making the allegations who will have their trauma exacerbated through victim-blaming trial by misogynistic culture. Rinse, repeat!

At the same time as the right in concert with News Corp falsely blame immigrants for high house prices, whipping up division and hate, they also bash Labor for working to addresss high prices. This hypocrisy is astounding and also typical. My analysis👇🏻 independentaustralia.net/politics/pol...

independentaustralia.netNews Corp campaign against housing affordability shows right-wing hypocrisyNews Corp’s response to falling house prices exposes the hypocrisy of a right-wing campaign that weaponises housing unaffordability while attacking reforms designed to address it.

I demand an apology from Gina Rinehart for using her billions she has extracted from resources owned by all Australians to underwrite the far right in Australia in an effort to extend her grotesque wealth at the expense of the safety of the planet and social cohesion! She owes us all an apology!

I hope everyone who has rightly complained about housing unafforability for years and years is going to jump in and defend Labor for reforming negative gearing in the face of right wing media’s attacks. Even if you don’t “like” Labor, surely you can see why this collective support is important?

Saul Eslake in The Guardian frames it as Labor's fault they can't "sell" house prices falling. Is it really Labor's fault they can't sell this message or is it the right wing media screaming that house price reductions is a BAD THING? I own my home and support housing affordability! It's positive!

If you’re interested in the reasons why the hard right are rising in the UK, Australia and US, I highly recommend listening to Van Badham’s interview with UK Labour councillor Peter Marshall. It’s a fascinating but also really concerning discussion 😬 podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/t...

Hanson says domestic violence is a “two way street”. Does she also think people who are assaulted by strangers had it coming? Is it a victim’s fault when they are burgled - did they wear something that made the burglar think he was justified in stealing from them? No? Hanson is despicable.

How was Karl Stefanovic meant to know Nine would draw the line at his podcast interview with Tommy Robinson when Karl had already hosted Barnaby Joyce who told the same racist anti-immigration story as Robinson? My analysis👇🏻 independentaustralia.net/business/bus...

independentaustralia.netNine's Stefanovic double standard exposedNine's decision to sack Karl Stefanovic over one far-right interview raises questions about where the broadcaster chose to draw the line.

Trump cheats in the World Cup - lobbying corrupt FIFA to reverse red card - for the same reason as he cheats at golf and the same reason he lies prolifically everytime he opens his mouth. He can’t win without cheating. He doesn’t have a good argument so he lies. Trump abuses his power. GO BELGIUM 🇧🇪

Karl Stefanovic offered a job as Hanson’s staffer, so basically paid by the public to keep doing what he was already doing at Nine - radicalising the public to hate immigrants on behalf of billionaires. Might be a bit of a pay cut though Karl!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Karl Stefanovic deliberately interviewed neo-Nazi Tommy Robinson to get himself fired by Nine so he can claim he was “cancelled” and become a cult hero of the far right. Radicalised extremists want to be able to be extreme and he couldn’t be to this extent on Channel 9.

Any analysis of political situation in the UK which doesn’t mention the economy is a mess because the far right anti-immigration Brexit campaign smashed it is giving a free pass to Nigel Farage who is now benefiting from the anger at the terrible economy that he created. Just say it, it’s not hard!

Does anyone else feel like every day more Australians are infected with the MAGA far right virus where they give in to their worst, meanest, bitter, vengeful and gullible versions of themselves and you feel totally powerless to stop it? Or is it just me? 😢
