I will be playing at the Band in a Hat Showcase tonight, 5pm, at the Jefferson Street Music Studio! Participants were randomly assigned bandmates and given 6 weeks to prepare a 15-minute set. My band is named Shiver, and I believe we are scheduled to go third.

My band will be playing at a benefit for All-Options Pregnancy Resource Center tonight at 7pm! We are the Magical Space Wizards from Outer Space, a folk/emo/metal/ska band, and this is our second show ever! We'll be playing along with The Sera-Tones and Negative Glow

Fantastic little story about everyone's favorite mathematician / comedy musician. 🧵

With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

"When she has an accident, I am so surprised because most of the time she is really good about it." If you asked someone to determine whether "most of the time she is really good about it" is *true* or not, they would fall back on the "more than half" definition, 3/4

but that's clearly not what is intended here. The speaker would hardly be surprised by an accident if this person was only careful 40% of the time. Is there a term for this, where there is an accepted "official" meaning, but where that meaning is frequently not what is actually intended? 4/4

If you ask people to define "most", I think most people would say "more than half". But if you look at how the word is used, it often seems to mean something more like "large enough (for some purpose)" or maybe "enough more than half" or even "all but a negligible amount", as in: 2/4

Honestly, your videos are far from the worst offenders in this category, but given my vague impression of your online personality, my sense is that you might actually listen to this (hopefully) constructive criticism. 3/4

But selling my car doesn't cost him anything and doesn't reduce the number of Teslas on the road. And neither I nor the environment can afford just trashing it, so I'm gonna plaster it with the stickers I get from donating to liberal charities and get something else when it finally falls apart. 2/2

I made a typo today that raise some interesting questions about how my brain processes language while typing. tl;dr I intended to write "look" but I was thinking about the word "let" and I ended up writing "leck". #linguistics 1/3

I don't "hear" when I type; I don't feel like I'm transcribing sounds. So I'd expect that merging "look" with "let" would come out as "lek". There's no c in either word. The only reason the c is there in the non-word "leck" is as a "phonetic" spelling of the phonetic merging of "look" and "let". 2/3
