It was really nice to meet 3 of my new colleagues at the Institute for English Studies (SAS London) yesterday. Grabbed myself a desk by the window in the IES fellows room. Tempt me not, ice cream van. (Also £3 for a tiny square of millionaires shortbread. London prices eh 😮)

🗣 Public History Talks - Open for Booking! When we think about the drama of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, we often think of purpose-built London playhouses like the Globe. Yet much of the disruptive, political energy of the professional playing companies was forged on the road.

Regional performances regularly took place under the watchful eye of local officials in buildings like guildhalls. Many of these forgotten "theatres" still survive, and it was in one of these, Stratford-upon-Avon's Guildhall, that Shakespeare likely had his first encounter with the players.

On 11th and 25th October I’m delivering two public history talks for Shakespeare's Schoolroom & Guildhall. Drawing on our ongoing research partnership, I’ll be looking at what happened when touring players rolled into town, and how the political tensions of the age played out on a local stage.

After a pause after we got our exhibition up and running, and waiting to get some more research support, my work with Shakespeare's Schoolroom & Guildhall resumes this autumn, starting with the first entries in a new series of research talks! Booking opens soon! #Museums #PublicLecture #Engagement

Today, I had the chance to explore digital techniques for enhancing my research with Stratford's guildhall. There's so much potential for bringing the upper guildhall's theatrical past to life. This is just a crude mock-up, but I've been speaking with artists and VR experts to see what we can do!

As I'm in the early stages of planning something a bit more immersive around my regional theatre project (hush hush at the moment 🤫), I'm diving back into my earlier forays into the subject. Here's me discussing my early work on the Beyond Shakespeare podcast last year! youtu.be/EAbGPLIdNF0?...

Following the overwhelming response I had to my call for contributors to the public history/humanities workshop I'm organising, the funding application has just been sent off! Fingers crossed. Can't wait to (hopefully) have the opportunity to discuss public writing, museums, broadcasting & more 👏

Had a fun discussion today about my work on theatre and Coventry's guildhall with someone from Historic Coventry Trust today. Small world feeling to learn they found me through my previous talk at St. Mary's Guildhall. A second talk from me is coming up in November, don't you know 😉

Let my CFP go forth into the world! Naturally, if you know me, you'll know my own research has focused on guildhalls for a couple of years now - but I've long wanted a book that considers other "theatres" of the Renaissance. So please, come and join me in proposing chapters 🙏

Ahead of launching the actual CFP, thought I'd give a little preview of a thing I'm doing 🫢

Naturally have to pay tribute to my forebears - mine is the most recent in a line of Middleton monographs that, coincidentally, we all seem to have independently started working on around the same time! (I've previously had the pleasure of reviewing both Mark's and Eric's)

Thanks to everyone who was able to join us for this evening's book launch and who have sent in their well wishes today ☺️ (Here's an action shot of me and @tracelarkhall.bsky.social looking very scholarly mid-discussion, courtesy of my friend Josh Ballantyne)

Some good news to share with friends and #skystorians to start the week: I've received an early career fellowship with the Institute of English Studies at SAS, University of London, starting in October. This will provide support for my ongoing public history work inc. with the Stratford guildhall 😄
