I grew up in the US, but I was born in Canada. I had for a long time intended to become a US citizen, but never got around to it. Can't say at this point that I regret that. After returning to Canada in January 2025, I am now eligible to vote for the first time in my life at age 52.

My research ironically surfaced this quote from former Mayor of New York Fiorello La Guardia: "There is no Democratic or Republican way to clean a street." Every councillor votes their conscience, based on providing service. There are no whips, no party discipline.

This ironically makes my job harder, as it should. I have to *think* about my own values and match them to the stated values of the candidates. I actually had one ring my doorbell yesterday. I'm so happy to be here ๐Ÿฅน

Navigating municipal elections here is breaking my brain in the best possible way: Party affiliations are *banned.* Not discouraged, not frowned upon. *Illegal.*

Just finished chapter 66 of This Inevitable Ruin. These books just continue to bake my brain ๐Ÿง  Donut is playing the most effed up version of Katamari Damacy ever ๐Ÿคฃ

I'm gonna start Preptober tomorrow so I can do NanoWriMo in November. First question: do I work on my big project, or pick something smaller scale that will fit into 50K words?

OMFG I just started This Inevitable Ruin and please God let the TV show make it that far so I can experience ninth floor Mordecai ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Dear BlueSky algorithm, As much as I want to be informed... More cat videos and personal interests if you please. Anime, video games, sci-fi/fantasy, tech (with an emphasis on hardware, I have enough AI in my life) music, travel. Please and thank you ๐Ÿ˜

A not - so - great but illuminating movie would be Jupiter Ascending. Don't watch for the acting. Or the plot, really. Watch for the view into intergalactic oligarchy. That's the real lede here.

Of course, we must not forget 2001: A Space Odyssey, and 2010: The Year We Make Contact. Those movies were 100% fiction the day they were released. We're down to maybe 50%. HAL exists, for all intents and purposes. Be on the lookout for monoliths?

If you want a *great* sci-fi action thriller about what is likely Coming to America, read Fall, Or Dodge in Hell by Neal Stephenson. The first half is largely set in "Ameristan." Nuff said.

I realize Iโ€™m just shouting into the wind here, but: please, please, please stop posting screenshots without links, or summarizing breaking news events without links. Thereโ€™s a serious problem with unsourced assertions all over the world right now, donโ€™t be part of the problem.

I just finished the third book of the Mistborn series. I've been reading science fiction and fantasy for over forty years. It is my favorite, by far. I hope someday, someone realizes what a treasure it is, and gives it a chance to become the epic live-action series (not movie) it deserves to be.

The Honor Of Kings episode of Secret Level is another example of turning a simple MOBA into an epic philosophical masterpiece I'm not sure we could handle a game as good as the fiction being created from them

My template for being a decent human is the end of the movie Scrooged. Face the parts of yourself you don't much like. Make friends with them. Thank them for their service, then let them go.

I want to watch TV coverage of the live fall of the Syrian regime. CNN is airing a Giuliani documentary, Fox News has a comedian joking about Canada, MSNBC a documentary about migrants So I turned on BBC,which is breathlessly switching between Syria, South Korea demonstrations, and Ghana election

Experimenting with a 24-hour embargo of the name of the president-elect. Anticipating a much improved experience here, where it's already so much better than the other place ๐Ÿ˜

I just realized another thing I love about Bluesky Never once so far have I had a post disappear on me. The timeline stays *where I leave it.* Feels like that shouldn't be such a big deal but it is!
