Trying to imagine how people would respond if some food corporation invented cheese in the present day. Like cheese didn't exist, and now they're trying to put this new product on the market

Islamophobia among Republicans is at highest level since we started polling on this issue over a decade ago. Read the full report on prejudice toward Muslims and Jews, compared to other groups: sadat.umd.edu/sites/sadat....

I am also concerned about a race to the bottom w.r.t. court packing. But if we do not demonstrate moral courage to fight back against what we know is wrong, the Republicans have *absolutely no incentive* to agree to any bipartisan reforms. They will take their 6-3 court and go home.

Dr. Samantha Hancox-Li@sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com

"A fear of a “race to the bottom” is understandable, but when it is clear that your opponent seeks to drag you to your death, it is better to vigorously resist before you are face down in the silt."

And while it is radical, you must understand that the judiciary is the only battleground that matters. Every attempt to fix the institutions of this country legislatively will be dashed by them on spurious grounds. You cannot turn back the tide of fascism without fixing the court, you can only delay

Love that Angela Paxton ad where she says "let's address the elephant in the room" and then doesn't do that at all (the elephant being that Ken Paxton repeatedly cheated on her, a state senator, and she also refused to recuse herself during his impeachment so the rest of TX Senate barred her)

Perhaps when we're young adults, it's easy to discard our family's biases and views as silly. Then, at some point, you start looking for a strong identity. Many look towards ancestry, religion, etc, and it can be especially affirming when someone reifies those old beliefs your family held.

There are many Behind the Bastards episodes that drive this home. The most recent one on Radovan Karadzic about how he had many Muslim friends and a cosmopolitan lifestyle, but at some point he fell in politically with a faction of nationalists who glorified those Serbian war poems he grew up with.

In some ways, this is the story of almost every diaspora kid who grows up normally, but ends up being radicalized into committing acts of terror or crimes against humanity. Someone is able to "hook" them because they never fully convinced themselves or made themselves disgusted by those beliefs.

I'm basically 100% confident Eggers of all people knows the difference between Old English and Early Modern English. The source who told the reporter probably doesn't, though.

Robert Eggers is set to direct a new film adaptation of ‘ROMEO AND JULIET’. The film will feature the actors speaking in Olde English. (Source: www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...)

idk, I think clowning on Paul here is motivated reasoning because people don't like AI companies and find AI art cringe. LLMs are really cool architectures and they do actually have deep implications for what human language is actually doing

It's like, ok, someone has just asked me my opinion on something in Spanish. I have understood that. Now to give my opinion... and nothing pops out. I don't (yet) have that "inner voice" in Spanish to guide me like I do in English.

Maybe this is all passé to people who have read great works on semiotics or epistemology, but it must be at least somewhat suggestive that to understand language, to be able to ingest it and opine cogently, *is* no different than knowledge itself.

It's actually bizarre that a latent space of language, phrases and words broken down into a series of numbers, ends up replicating cognition so well. It suggests something deeper about language and what "doing language" is.

I'm sure everyone who has learned a second language knows this, but there's this experience of feeling dumb, REALLY dumb, when trying to converse in language that you're learning. It's not exactly the feeling of being unable to translate your thoughts, it's the feeling of having no thoughts at all.

I'm not gonna say Brent Strom isn't a legend, but this move does give me the sense of being nostalgia. A sort of oldhead personnel hire instead of something more forward-looking #astros

my brother (19) and his new girlfriend went to utah to visit some of her family and they went to the spot where charlie kirk got shot and in the family group chat he preempted it with "not trying to be edgy just thought it would be cool"
