If you’re seeing The Odyssey this weekend, remember that The Iliad, where Odysseus’ story begins, is the only Dune prequel worth reading. (Atreides = Sons of Atreus. Paul is canonically a direct descendent of Menelaus.)

canonically, this still will have a lot of explaining to do. fremen are conditioned from (very) early childhood not to waste any water. that's why it's a big deal when Paul gives moisture to the dead - they're in awe of it because they can't do it. it's an inhibition not easily overcome.

i’m trying to play it cool, but - just between us - i’m getting more hyped every time i watch the trailer. i need to stop doing that. and i need to stop going through it frame by frame

Just made this connection and I love it. Origin of "to decide:" decidere is a latin verb composed of the prefix de- (meaning "off" or "down") and caedere ("to cut") Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife - chopping off what's incomplete and saying: 'Now, it's complete because it's ended here.'

offtopic: I was a bit concerned that the Odyssey movie is coming out too soon after the latest adaptation. I've now looked it up: the Hallmark TV miniseries (which I remember enjoying) came out in 1997... then again, Ralph Fiennes's The Return was only 2 years ago.

part of the reason I fell in love with Dune is the quiet and subtle world-building. e.g. Duncan deduces that Leto II must've banned shields because of the lasgun-shield interactions and the ban on atomics - but readers can realize it's because sandworms will go berserk and Leto is part sandworm now

ah yeah, i remember that from the later Dune books

Some of the same billionaires who bankrolled AI now admit the technology could one day kill us all. And they’re funding a new plan to stop it—genetically engineered genius babies.

an anagram for Paul Atreides is “ideal pasture” - which makes perfect sense because he promises to turn Dune into a green paradise then again, you can also arrange the letters as “diaper salute” so what do i know 🫡

- openAI’s CEO literally said AI will most likely lead to the end of the world, but in the meantime there will be great companies created with serious machine learning - ah yeah, I remember that from the later Dune books

like I know he wanted to describe a muscle mommy, but the phrasing just throws me. what's a professional muscle fanatic? what's deceptive care? how can you move like that? what does he meeeean? :D

Dune Navigator Martin@dunenavigator.com

Dune quotes without context: “she moved with the deceptive care of a professional muscle fanatic”

i'll never get over the fact that we didn't see leto's big fat greek wedding

i dont know how you can call yourself the descendant of atreus and not talk about your grandma’s moussaka not a single mention of tzatziki either six books and not one gyros

something I want to write heist Dune book, Lanville and a ragtag band of Atreides and Fremen raiding the Hark spice stores on Geidi Prime it starts where Leto gives the command in the book and ends where Lanville is killed by Feyd in the DV movie, connecting the two think Rogue One - a Dune story
