25 YEARS AGO: In the days following Sept. 11, 2001, an American flag was planted on a dune at the south end of Nauset Spit in Eastham. It remained there for quite some time. In the second photo, I’m holding on during a raging nor’easter.

Henry Beston returned to Eastham on Thursday night, as Wellfleet actor John Anderson portrayed The Outermost House author in front of a sold out audience at the Eastham Historical Society’s 1869 Schoolhouse Museum. Great job, John! #outermost100

“We should have a living relationship with nature. Some kind of relationship between man & nature is necessary to the peace of his soul, something that the Indian has. Machinery is all right as a servant, but it is poison as a master.” — Henry Beston, American Legion meeting in Quincy, Mass., 1933
