DXGL 0.5.28 has a slight visual issue in DXGL Config in Dark Mode on systems older than Windows 11 25H2. Since this issue is minor, the fix will be implemented in a later release. Until then here's a teaser of a WIP UI refresh early in development.

DXGL 0.5.28 has been released. This release includes High DPI improvements, mouse related fixes, and resolves a regression that made the previous release incompatible with Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 (requires a special build). dxgl.org/downloads/

If you install the most recent update to Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable v14 you'll find the Control Panel lists it as Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable. This is still up to date and DXGL Setup will still recognize it as new enough. This issue is strictly cosmetic.

The version of the Redistributable that comes with the June update fixes this issue and it once again says Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable.

Wine 11.6 has new DLL loading functionality to better handle custom DirectX wrappers and game mods. Starting with DXGL 0.5.27, if installing in Wine, the version will be checked and if the version is 11.6 or greater Setup will no longer adjust the DLL load order by default.

Dark mode support is fully confirmed for DXGL 0.5.27, and in addition a new mode has been added to force the window border of a target app or game to be square, so the corners don't get cut off.

Please note that while this will support down to Windows 10 version 1809 there will be limitations with older Windows versions and not all elements can be made dark.

Work in progress dark mode support for DXGL Config, to be added to 0.5.27 if I can get it to meet my standards.

I have scanned my website for this infected installer, and it was not present anywhere on my site or my local backups. For further verification, you can refer to the GPG signatures included in the GitHub releases to ensure the file was made by me and not altered.

Versions of DXGL in the 0.5 series due to an architectural limitation may run slowly with Direct3D games. However, you may be able to boost performance by setting Affinity to single core. Not sure what weird things are why, but I noticed my Athlon XP was faster than expected.

As a further addendum to this post, the game I had been playing and ensuring DXGL is compatible with, Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny Win95 version 1.31, has frame drops when in default multi-core mode, but even setting it to a single E-core the framerate is more steady.

Actually the scaled primary fix as it stands will not be incompatible with the rewrite. Already got it partially working by triggering a transfer from the scaled surface to the unscaled surface at the end of each D3D scene.

I just fixed a regression regarding DirectX 2/3 emulation, which was preventing Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny from running in hardware accelerated mode. Here's a screenshot of the game running at 3840x2160 resolution.

This bug prevented all Direct3D accelerated games using those DirectX versions from running as the regression involved the creation of "execute buffers" which were how draw lists were implemented in those D3D versions.

I have resolved some merge conflicts in the 0.5.x branch of DXGL, as I plan on at least one more release. As a result, the minumim Windows 10 requirement will also apply to the next version. Users of previous Windows versions should use the legacy version moving forward.

As a heads-up, older versions of DXGL still work on modern operating systems like Windows 10 and Windows 11; they may be needed for some games as later versions currently have regressions.

In light of today's release of Visual Studio 2026, for future versions of DXGL the legacy installer will be required for all Windows versions below 10. This is due to new system requirements for the current v14 Redistributable.

I have been having server issues likely due to AI scrapers. If this happens when accessing my site the server still usually finds enough CPU cycles to host the direct downloads of DXGL at dxgl.org/download .

There will be at least one more maintanence build of DXGL 0.5.x coming up soon; this version will by request attempt to add support for Windows NT 4.0 via the MSVC 2005 build.
